20 Years at Woodlake

I lived at Woodlake for 20 years. For me, it was an ideal location, great floorplan, plenty of storage in my apartment, spectacular views, never a problem in the laundry room, some stellar neighbors (one of whom is still there) - overall a wonderful home. However, after asking for what I considered "reasonable" maintenance requests - for example, having the apartment painted (after 18 years, it needed it), I was told "no". I understand that Oregon law states that apartments are to be painted every two years but I never investigated this law. I also asked to have a washer/dryer installed and was again told "no". I must admit that I never had a problem with the laundry room and the price never went up (75 cents a load) while I lived there but I was getting tired of hauling laundry. I began to be dissatified and when Summit took over a few years ago, things really went downhill. I also asked repeatedly to have my windows washed outside (I was on the 2nd floor and did not want to tackle this myself) but I was always told that management had to get three quotes first - it never happened. I finally hired my own window washer and, for $40.00, had sparkling clean windows inside and out. However, this is something that the complex should do on a routine basis, several times a year. When Prometheus owned the property, windows were washed at least twice a year, and all I had to do was ask and they were washed even more frequently. I never had insect or ant problems - there were a lot of spiders but considering that we had lots of trees and nature surrounding the units I think this is to be expected. You just deal with this. A neighbor living in a downstairs unit did have rats IN her unit. Not at all her fault as her apartment was always kept clean. Management was fairly reasonable about this - called an exterminator and the situation was taken care of. All management and maintenance staff were always pleasant and caring but "corporate" holds the reins and controls the whole place. Three years ago, I recommended Woodlake to a friend who was moving here from Ohio - they lived here 1-1/2 years before moving on and had no negative experiences. I think Woodlake is great for short termers (2,3,4,5 years and then move on) but for us "long termers" (and there are a few) management needs to realize that we're part of their "bread and butter" and treat us well. I paid my rent on time, or early, for 20 years, my checks NEVER bounced, I did not complain about anything, I asked for reasonable maintenance and always reported problems immediately (and for the most part they were taken care of immediately)...............I have since found a new apartment that has everything I want (especially a washer/dryer and I did laundry 30 minutes after moving in)...........it was time for me to move on. Move into Woodlake - you will probably have a "freshened" unit and a great neighborhood - but stay just a few years, no longer. And be aware that the Woodlake website shows pictures of an "updated" apartment. Many of the "existing" apartments do not look this attractive. When tenants move out, the bare minimum is done to prepare the apartment for a new tenant. For example, the linoleum in my old apartment was the original (30 years old with burn marks from previous tenants) and the carpet was 15 years old. Neither were replaced when I moved out and now the apartment is apparently "move in ready" again.
