The management is biased against the lower-income residents, from not only my own personal experience but from what I have witnessed of their behavior towards the higher income residents and the lower income residents. I was told by the management that "income-restricted housing",when I phoned the Yards from Florida on the phone, so I needed accurate information since it's a long way to travel, and because there is no "income-restricted" housing in Florida, just Section VIII) that in order to be applicable you have to earn 2 1/2 times the rent, but then once you are approved you pay less rent than the normal price. That didn't make sense to me, and when I asked a few more questions to clarify this nonsensical qualification, I was given nasty replies. I later learned that if you are low-income, you had better not question their "authority" or they will become quite abusive. When I told a different member of management that I had been given wrong information and nasty treatment by another member of the staff I was finally given the correct information--that of course "income-restricted" doesn't mean that you have to earn 2 1/2 times the rent-- and so I applied. However, because I had said I didn't want to have to deal with that kind of rude and abusive treatment by management, once I arrived at the Yards the management was openly hostile, aggressive and acted completely like bullies. I then noticed that they acted this way with the "income-restricted" tenants and were very nice and socially correct with the other tenants who are not poor and so vulnerable as the lower income residents. I have witnessed the mgmt stand around and make jokes about the "income-restricted" tenants, what they look like, how they dress, ha ha. This is all quite sanctioned behavior for them.

The studio I got was advertised on their website as more than 400 sq. feet, but was much, much smaller than that. I could hear everything coming from the next apartment to me, including the neighbor washing his dishes in the sink; of course his television too, even if it was on a low volume. I lived in a studio near one of the outside entrances, and so the door was constantly slamming because it operates on some hinge which makes it slam shut. Every party or noise any neighbor made would circulate accoustically in the courtyard and amplify, so every noise could be heard. If a tenant was on the "cool" list of the mgmt, i.e., not poor, able to defend themselves or move out easily, the mgmt were pretty lax about loud stupid parties. But, if a tenant is poor, than any disturbance is treated with aggression including hostility and bullying.

Altogether a horrible management, unless you ask no questions and put up with abuse with a smile. I am not allowed to use profanity or specify which members of management, and they have asked this service to remove three of my reviews already. Therefore, what a pity that the one or two nice mgmt. people (who usually all leave quickly, anyway) are included in this summary of the stinking yards at union station. Run away unless you don't care about a low level of quality or don't care about noise problems, incompetent management (I consider friendliness and accuracy in information to be a part of competency, not just being able to ask for rent). Some of the "income-restricted" tenents love the Yards, but considering the other, even worse options available for impoverished people, the Yards is at least a modern building with some nice landscaping. The buildings smell, as well, especially the "income-restricted" building. I was glad to leave, what a horrible management and a horrible tiny, loud studio.
