At first we were attracted to the apartments because of the floor plans, they really are awsome apartments and seemed to be well maintained. They were also very cheap...at first. We first signed the lease at $450/mo. This seemed like a great price, however after living there for 1 day we realized why. The very first night we were there we witnessed a group of kids stealing the wheels off a neighbors car. This was only the beginning, as our cars and actual apartment itself were broken into within the first six months of living there. To make matters worse, we actually received 3 different rent increases during that same time period, and they finally stopped at $575/mo. We tried to fight these increases, but if you read the bottom of the lease there is a small disclaimer that says they can change the rent as much and as often as they see fit, and to get out of the lease you have to pay a ridiculous penalty and forfeit your security deposit.
That's not all. During the two years we were there, we counted 13 notices of entry. That's at least once every other month they were coming into the apartment -almost always when we weren't there- to do "inspection of living conditions." It's understandable that they would want to do these inspections (especially once you get to know the kind of people who lived there) but it seemed just a little too excesive and felt like a violation of our privacy.
Another annoyance, there is only _one_ dumster to share between the 200something apartments. We were on the farthest side of the complex, and taking the trash out was an all day affair! Not only that, but a few times there was so much trash that the office put up a sign saying you couldn't throw your trash away for nearly a week. We had to haul the trash all the way back to the apartment and let it stink up the balcony because they couldn't call someone to come pick it up.
The speed bumps in that complex are terrible, and if you ever drive through there in the summer, you see why...swarms of kids playing in the roads. We complained several times to the office about having at least parental supervision if they were going to play in the middle of the road. One day I got into an argument with a neighbor woman because I "nearly hit" her 3 year old girl after she ran out into the street chasing a ball. The woman was "watching" from a 2nd story apartment! Who lets their 3yr old play outside by themselves' I couldn't believe it!!!
And last but definetly not least...the drugs. They were everywhere! One time I came home from work to find at the very least 9 cop cars, with police and dogs everywhere with their guns drawn! They had my entire building surrounded. I talked to them for a little bit, and it turns out it was one of the city's biggest drug operations right down the hall from us!!! An officer had to escort me to my door to make sure I was safe. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well for a few days, and never felt safe there afterwards.
