You get what you pay for

Let's face it, you're not paying for luxury, so you're not gonna get it. Overall, can't complain too much. Your water and heat are paid for, all you get is an electric bill. The apartments are spacious enough to fit all your furniture, but you could use more storage space. I've heard the horror stories about the lady at the leasing office, but all my interactions with her have been really pleasant. (Some of these interactions have been over late rent, or maintenance issues so...she's had reason to be mean and hasn't. I assume she's the kind of person who will treat you with the same attitude you treat her with. If you come to her office yelling, she's less likely to be nice to you than if you come down and nicely make your requests.)

As far as maintenance, any problems we had were minor and were taken care of relatively fast. DON'T contact the office with these problems, they will just put you on an appointment list. Contact maintenance directly and they'll be right over ASAP.

I never had any problems with neighbors -- everyone is quiet, and nice - everyone says hello to one another. You're nestled back in the west end in family neighborhoods - vandalism etc. are virtually unheard of. There are a lot of families here, too...if you're looking for a cheap place for a year or two this is a good place to come.

The issues I've had:
-You will not get cell phone reception. These are solid brick walls.
-closet space. There is not nearly enough. The storage lockers downstairs in the basements are creepy.
-They painted the kitchen cabinets with paint to match the walls. This is fine except I think they were metal cabinets, and it's layer upon layer of latex paint. Anytime we cook in the kitchen and it gets hot, the paint peels off the cabinets, and chips onto the floor. Warm, sticky paint plus linoleum floor equals...there are paint chips stuck to the floor. That I can NOT get off. They really need to just replace the cabinets with wood.
-They need to start replacing windows. They re-paint the apartments after every tenant, including the windowsills, and several of our windows were painted shut when we moved in. We had them come fix this a couple times, but still, it's hard to open or close them. Not really worth the effort, I almost killed myself trying to open the kitchen window while having to kneel on the countertop for leverage. Uncool.
-Think of the most annoying neighbor you had when you were growing up, who used to mow the lawn at 7:30AM on a Saturday. THAT is what the maintenance crews here do. The lawn is impeccable, and the place looks nice, but that is not without the sacrifice of sleep. They'll be weedwhacking outside your window on the days you decide you can actually sleep in. I promise you that.
-My last complaint is laundry. I get that because they pay our water, we should throw some quarters their way to do a load of wash. But it costs me 3.25 to do a full load of wash. That seems sort of ridiculous to me, especially since by the time when I can do laundry (at night, I work long 12 hour days), the washers and dryers shut off at 9PM. Yes, even in the middle of a load of wash. So if I try to do my wash at, say, 8:30, it will shut off at 9, full of water with my clothes still in it. For 3.25 in all quarters, i should be able to finish that load.

I realize I've written quite a long rant. In all though, this is a good place to live and you do get what you pay for. (If we paid more, we'd have nicer cabinets I'm sure.) And honestly, it is quiet and the rooms are decent sized, so...it all makes up for it. Those are just my suggestions for things that could change. :)
