Be Prepared When Apartment Shopping

I wish we had shopped around a little more before settling in at Franklin Commons. There are alot of things to consider when choosing an apartment--location, size, floor plan, etc. One thing you may not consider until it's too late--are the walls and floors level' Everything we put in our kitchen had to have wedges underneath. We also had to put wedges under the tv, dressers, etc. There are "weak spots" in the floor. And the quality of the paint they use is ridiculous. If you look at the wall, it gets dirty. And when you try to wipe the dirt off--you actually wipe the paint off. Yes, they pay for the hot water--but you share hot water heaters with your neighbors. I can't see paying that kind of money to take cold showers. And I refuse to set up a shower schedule with complete strangers. If you have kids, you should know they are only allowed to play at the playground or in the parking lot--they are not allowed on the grass--which is ok since some of the dog owners don't bother to clean up after their pets. Another thing that really bugged me--they make this big deal about people driving on the grass. While I have no intention of driving on the grass, it really irks me when I see maintenance vehicles on the grass at least once a week. (And they are not always loading/unloading heavy appliances.) And I hope someone from the office is going to read this--they shouldn't be so picky about how people pay their bills--as long as they get their money. They want the rent and gas in one check each month. And they don't want it in an envelope. It is too much hassle for them to open an envelope. Well, for my bookkeeping purposes I prefer to pay for the rent seperate from the gas. And I prefer to not just drop a check in the box without an envelope. (I don't seal the envelope--so it should make it a little easier.) Sooo....if you're in a pinch and Franklin Commons is your only option--by all means, pray for a short-term lease. However, if you can afford better--you can definitely do better. All that being said--I will be dancing a very happy dance the day our lease expires.
