Beware of bugs & management

I picked this place out of a hat, had to move very quickly to get a new job and proximity to I-95 & Turnpike was important. Bad signs appeared immediately--rental agent initially agreed to my move in date, then tried to put it off as she sensed a close. After a little effort, she finally re-agreed to meet my required date but did NOT let me look at the unit I would be renting. Since I was over a barrel, I accepted the apartment based only on the model unit I was taken through.

Upon move-in, it was apparent why she hadn't let me see it. Despite their having 3 weeks to fix it up prior to my arrival, there were large cracks in the living room window (which was single-pane glass, GREAT for the electric bills which I also paid to Korman) and an actual HOLE to the outside in my bedroom closet next to the circuit breaker. The appliances were old but functional, and the cabinets looked like they were recycled from student housing. The bathroom was microscopic and just ratty-looking, and no amount of cleaning could ever improve it. The in-unit mini washer/dryer was always malfunctioning. To be fair, the windows WERE replaced within a month of my arrival, with brand-new double-pane glass, but the hole in my closet was never fixed. And as the weather warmed up, I discovered various and numerous insects in the apartment, including what a previous reviewer called "house centipedes" (I thought they were silverfish) and a persistent ant colony. The house centipedes were awful--I'd sometimes kill 2 or 3 in a night, although luckily my cat helped with those.

The maintenance people were nice enough, and did hook me up with minor repair work when on-site for other problems. I don't fault them for the major problems with the place; that blame lies squarely with the cheap management.

Ahh, management. First, they "forgot" to send me a lease renewal notice after my first year was nearing the end. Had I not already planned on staying I would have been legally bound to a second year of payments anyway. Next, although I always paid my rent on time, they didn't always process the payments in a timely fashion and tried to nail me for late fees. Worse, they somehow misapplied one of my rent payments and tried to claim I was delinquent--I had to spend an entire night searching my bank records to prove that I had submitted the payment and they had cashed it, and even then it was an ordeal getting the issue resolved. By that time I knew I'd have to leave, so I was very sure to write my non-renewal letter and submit it more than 60 days before the end of the lease because it was obvious what they'd do wth my deposit if I gave them the slightest excuse. Here's a tip: write the letter in something resembling Legal-speak. I did, and I think it scared them enough to not hassle me too much and give back most of my deposit.

Other points: snow removal sucked, they'd take forever to get the sidewalks and routinely buried cars in the parking lot. Car theft/vandalism was pretty common there--my girlfriend had her license plate torn off one weekend she came to visit, and some locals informed me of the place's reputation for being a hunting ground for chop-shops. Neighbors were a mixed bunch, some nice ones, and a few straight from an episode of Cops--complete with cops showing up to evict them or serve them with restraining orders.

I think I was a pretty good tenant and neighbor, and I'm not a chronic complainer who's mad because he didn't get his tiniest BS issues fixed perfectly. And if you're wondering why I stayed two years, it's because I traveled contantly for work and didn't have to come home to the place every single night. And as much as I want to be fair and respect the good neighbors and maintenance staff I met, I can't in honesty recommend the place unless they cut the rent in half. I'm gone now, and happier for it.
