Incredibly convenient

I just found this website and read all the poor reviews, but I feel I should comment on some of these opinions, having lived here for almost a year now.

In ANY new complex of this size, you're going to have maintenance problems galore the first few years of operation; this is simply unavoidable. And to pay a maintenance staff of the size required to catch every problem as soon as it percolates is highly improbable and unrealistic. In my experience, the maintenance staff and leasing office personnel have attended to my requests immediately...which included checking my washer, garbage disposal unit and water heater. The people are incredibly friendly and they make every attempt to ask me how I and my dog are doing.

I couldn't be more pleased with my apartment. The walls between the rooms (and adjacent apartments) are well built and transmit only the highest and lowest of frequencies at high volumes. My apartment doesn't have a South facing window, but I only turned the A/C on 6 times last summer; opening the windows is more than enough to circulate air. During this winter, I opted to keep my thermostat set lower (I'm a cold-weather person), but if I needed immediate heat I turned on my fireplace and 15 minutes later the apartment was plenty toasty. My DSL is almost always up, very few disconnects. The fire alarm has only gone off once while I've been in the building (and that was due to someone sticking a lighter to a smoke detector). The view is great (pool view...hoowaa) and my neighbors are very friendly and respectful.

As concerns noise, there are problems I have experienced, but they have been temporary. My neighbors above used to practice their WWE moves until the wee hours of the morning. My neighbors next door used to play their deepest thumping, base-heavy music past 10 PM. My neighbors below used to have parties on their deck during the summer, even on week nights. Every single time, the problem was resolved by calmly knocking on their doors and asking them to be respectful of those who need to wake early...and the occurances have not happened since. Noises such as barking dogs, vacuum cleaners and loud movies are completely diffused by the walls. I can't comment on the 202 traffic noises since I don't face the road, nor do I face the surrounding homes, but if you wanted perfect privacy, why would you live in an apartment complex' I believe part of the problem with noise and litter on the complex grounds has to do with younger people throwing parties in their apartments, particularly if parents aren't around for that night. That would be one of my complaints for this building; that some people are far too young and immature to be renting apartments.

I share frustrations with the overflowing trash bags from the compactor and the poop bags on the ground around the exterior waste baskets. But in reality, I've never once seen the compactor "overflowing". The problem is, one person is too lazy to put their trash in the compactor and everyone else follows suit and assumes it's too full, so they throw their bags on the ground as well. Several times, I've climbed past the bags only to open the door and find a half-full compactor. You certainly can't blaim the office or maintenance for renter laziness, but it is an unsightly problem. Signs have since been posted regarding fines for not disposing of trash appropriately, I can only hope they enforce the rule.

Other minor nuisances include the lack of propane in the grills (which is caused because they are so popular during the summer months for barbecues); elevators temporarily out of order (which was just resolved by enclosing the causeways to insulate the shaft); parking is tight, the overflow is well away from the buildings and inconsiderate people have a tendency to park in handicap spots or "parallel park", blocking sidewalks.

In the end, all the minor nuisances can't come close to out-weighing the conveniences and amenities. The gym here saves me anywhere from $50-100 a month. The billiards room is a regular haven for me, as is the theatre room for football games and movie nights. You have your choice of grocery stores, department stores, strip malls and restaurants all within a few miles in any direction. Essentially, if you're willing to deal with what inherently comes with "apartment life", you'll love it here. I looked at several other complexes in the area and found this to be the most convenient, friendliest and most affordable (among luxury apartment complexes). If you're looking for the privacy afforded by a house...well, buy a house.
