Disgraceful living conditions and management

My husband and I have been tenants at the Home Properties of Devon for over two-and-a-half years. We have been model residents and have always paid our rent on time. In the two-and-a-half years we have been here, we have encountered so many problems and such terrible service that we are moving out in July. Here are some of the problems we've experienced:
1. Our building is not properly secured. A strange man walked into our building and into my apartment when I was alone, and this terrified me. He began yelling at me and asking me for directions somewhere. I reported the incident to a Home Properties of Devon team member, and she said that she would write a letter to all residents to make sure to keep the doors properly closed. This action was never taken, and I frequently find the doors to our building wide open. Also, the keypad to enter our building frequently does not operate.
2. The maintenance team knocks on our door at inconvenient times to make appointments instead of calling us on the phone.
3. I was burned so badly in our shower that I was crying in pain and had red welts on my back due to constant and rapidly changing water temperatures. This burn occurred AFTER I reported the problem and AFTER a maintenance team member came to our apartment to "fix" the problem. Obviously, the problem was not properly fixed.
4. On April 29, 2009, I was informed that there may be a sewage line break in the area of our apartment. We have had flies in our apartment for several months, and we recently found out that they are sewer flies. Sewer flies can transmit bacteria, and my husband and I are extremely upset that we have been living in these conditions for months. Currently, there are flies throughout the building and in our apartment. Our neighbor complained about the flies for a month before any action was taken. When action was finally taken, I was called on my cell phone and told that there was a "plumbing emergency" in our apartment and that they needed to get in right away. They didn't give me any details regarding the emergency.
5. In addition, on at least three occasions, we have found our bathtub and bathroom filled with citronella ants (even after having an exterminator come in on one occasion). On several occasions, we have also found dozens of citronella ants all over the floor in our bedroom and near the sliding door that leads to the outside.
6. The management team only gives us a few days of notice when the service team must enter our apartment to check fire alarm batteries, change air conditioning filters, etc. This is NOT enough time to find a pet sitter for our dog, and we are not comfortable allowing strangers into our apartment when our dog is there. We are also not comfortable leaving our dog locked in a bedroom or cage because she gets very anxious in these situations. I would be happy to find a pet sitter for my dog, but a few days notice is simply not enough time.
7. After living here for about two years, new handicapped parking spaces were added, but we were never informed of this change. I parked in a handicapped space at night because I did not see it there, and I got a ticket. Had I been properly informed, I would have known about and noticed the spot and never would have parked there. We asked the management team if they would consider reimbursing us for the ticket due to their lack of communication with residents, and our request was denied.
8. One of our neighbors throws cigarette butts all over the lawn outside of our apartment. The management team informed us that they would have the butts cleaned up, but the butts were still there for at least a week or two after I called to complain.
9. One of the dryers in the laundry room was in disrepair for several months.
10. The recycling receptacle at the property was missing for at least several weeks.
11. The members of the maintenance team constantly park their trucks and carts wherever they want. We ve been blocked in on several occasions. On several occasions, the maintenance trucks and carts have taken up multiple parking spaces.
12. Both showers in our apartment do not drain properly, despite the maintenance team coming to repair them on several occasions.
13. We have called and emailed our manager, ------------, on several occasions and she often neglects to return our calls or emails.
14. The shuttle bus has not been running since December 2008, so residents now must pay $20 per month to park at the train station. We were never given any explanation as to why the bus is not running.
15. Our neighbors are extremely loud. The children upstairs scream, slam doors, and thump around the apartment at all hours of the day and night. The residents living two floors above us talk loudly on their balcony when we are trying to sleep. The windows, walls, and ceilings do not provide any sound barrier.
We are appalled at the lack of service and the terrible conditions at Home Properties of Devon. I can't believe that this apartment complex still has tenants. Stay away.

wow this is so bogus. i have been living here for almost three months and heard no such thing as sewer line damage and i have noticed that they give you about two weeks notice prior to maintenance coming to check batteries and stuff like that. as far as the handicapped parking, wow they have signs posted in the grass in front of the spots!!! never had a problem with the water either. and i have never had a problem with maintenance coming when they were not suppose to be there. you are full of crap and everyone who reads your post should know that becase if it was that bad why would you stay for 2.5years! what a dummy!!!!

TS82 is spot on here, and I can affirm those things she has described are true. As for the 5/27 anonymous "wow this is so bogus..." post: Pay no attention to his attacks on your review and his insults. This 5/27 anonymous poster shows behavior that is clearly indicative of an inferiority complex, probably from someone who suffers from a mental/physical malaise. If he wants to waste time with the profane and lewd comments, let him. Make no mistake, that impudent cur does not deserve to live on the Main Line.

Dear TS82, i am totally on your side! Get out of there! You will never win with the stupid management and arrogant corporate people! W got out a year and a half ago to La Maison and the only regret is that we didn't do it earlier! And whoever posted the response that Home Properties of Devon is a greatest place on earth - needs to get a CAT Scan of his head IMMIDIATELY! Or....perhaps it's someone from the management!

I'm with TS82. it sounds like the "bogus" comment came from one of the property managers, judging by the defensive tone. You should report them to the Better Business Bureau, they are disgusting slumlords! Cut your losses and get out if you can and never look back:)
