A waste of time and money

I live in a two-bedroom apartment with one roommate. We paid indecent amounts of money for it, but were so desperate for an apartment that we didn't care. That's the only reason you should rent from these people: desperation. When we walked into the office the first time, the staff were friendly and very helpful. They were a bit pushy, but at the time we overlooked it. We were shown a video of the apartments and were enthralled. They were beautiful! NOWHERE was there a notice that said "Warning: Not all apartments look this good." When we arrived at the start of next semester, my mother laughed at me. The apartment was a dump. (We would later meet the former inhabitants, who laughed at us and said "Wow, dude, that sucks. We totally trashed that place.") The paint job was lousy: the outlets had been painted directly over and were plugged with paint, there were drips all over the place, and our phone jack in the living room was precariously attached to the wall with masking tape. My roommate's room didn't even HAVE a phone jack! The only nice thing at first were the couch cushions and the newly purchased beds; everything else was heinous. We didn't have a table or chairs because "they hadn't come in yet." They weren't delivered until the second week of September and the boxes sat in our dining room for a day until the maintenence men came to put the table together. I think that's College Park's saving grace: the maintenence staff. They are friendly and courteous, at least those that I have dealt with. Regardless, those weren't the only problems. There are no closet doors in the whole apartment. Our bathroom mirror was chipped all around, one of the lights was out, the front of the sink was broken, and the towel rack was crudely repaired from it's destroyed state with a dowel rod. The new kitchen cupboards were full of sawdust. The holes from the old cupboards covered the kitchen walls. Our fridge makes dripping noises that it should not be making, the stove drawer is bent and closes improperly, and our oven has to be set 25 degrees lower than called for or else anything I cook burns. When the oven was broken last semester it took the office staff TWO DAYS to get someone to come fix it. I couldn't cook anything that wasn't microwavable during that time. There were stains all over the ceiling and the furnace filter (which when new, is a brilliant blue shade) was COMPLETELY and disgustingly gray. It looked like it hadn't been changed in years. The shelf in the closet of my room was severly bent in the middle. When we arrived to find one desk in the living room, we asked where the other was. We were politely (and ungraciously) informed that the apartments only came with ONE. (We also only had two beds. The apartments are specifically made for four people, but the staff only ordered enough beds for the people that signed leases.) It wasn't until my mother complained that they "found" another desk in storage. We can hear everything that goes on downstairs and next door; the walls are paper thin. Anytime someone goes up or down the stairs it sounds like someone is jumping up and down outside our door. We had to buy rather thick drapes, as our neighbors across the parking lot can see directly into our living room, and vice versa. Also, if you don't have a parking pass they put an annoying sticker on your car window and, ultimately, tow it. I, personally, do not drive. But I have friends who drive me everywhere. I pay the same amount of money as my roommate, why don't *I* get a specifically reserved space for them to park in, or at least a parking pass that I don't have to go and get renewed every day between the hours of 9 and 5' I have complained about this before and been met with "Call and leave a message, we'll make sure they don't tow the car. But we can't do anything about the stickers. We have a razorblade for you to scrape it off the window, though." Thank you, ---- and Wendy! The only amusement we've gotten out of our glorious apartment is hours of fun trying to figure out exactly what caused the trailing stains on the living room ceiling. (We think someone, in a drunk fit, squeezed a ketchup bottle up in the air for fun.) I wish I'd never rented our apartment. Don't waste your money: save it for a better deal. These people don't give two shakes about you, just your money.
