I lived at Granada for two years, 2003-2005. I would never live there again and only stayed the extra year because I was in graduate school and poor and could not afford to leave.
There are major problems with major water leaks! I lived on the third floor and everytime it rained, a huge area of my carpet near the sliding glass door would get SATURATED! Maintenance was called multiple times, at which point they would come and vacuum up the water (a few gallons plus) and attempt to fix the problem, which never was fixed at all. This was over a span of several months. I also had water leak into the kitchen, which is in the middle of the building (no windows), which was dripping into an electric socket. It took awhile for maintenance to come, as it was in the middle of the night, and when the guy came, he looked it over and said someone would take care of it in the morning - that the water, on the electrical socket, did not create a fire or safety hazard! I was not the only one with leaks - I had friends and neighbors who lived here who also experienced the same problem.
In addition, after I signed the lease and went to move my belongings into the apartment, I found that the apartment was NEVER CLEANED from the previous tenant. It was disgusting - grease on the kitchen walls, old beverages/food in the fridge, unvacuumed and unshampooed carpets, holes in the screens, etc. I was told I had to just sit around until it got cleaned - which took FIVE HOURS!! I had just driven 6hrs, which I explained to the office, and did not know anyone in town and I had to sit around and wait with my truck in the summer heat! In the end, the place was only cleaned half-assed and I had to spend the next few hours cleaning it myself.
When I moved out, they tried to tack on several additional charges, in addtion to the $35.00 check-out fee. They make you vacuum the carpets, but then they charged for paint - which is something they need to do BY LAW with each new tenant, and they tried to charge a cleaning fee - and the apartment was as clean as it was going to get.
These people are out for nothing more than to nickel and dime people to line their own pockets. While the rent is cheap and location is convenient, I would spend a little bit more for more hassle-free place to live. And this is also the feeling of my friends and neighbors - just ask around.

FYI, painting is not something that they need to do by law. They can't charge you for it if it's wear and tear, but they can charge for damage.

I think the point is getagrip (very appropriate handle, btw, for YOU) is that the landlords are charging for normal wear and tear and claiming this is damage
