Not as "Luxury" as you think

Our Apt. search was in mid-autumn, and after rejecting some clunkers on the Mainline, we drove out to Coventry Crossing, through streets lined with golden yellow foliage and winding country lanes shimmering with the reds and purples of autumn. The complex was bathed in this glow- their landscaping is impeccable- and the parking lots were full of Saabs, Volvos, Mercedes, BMWs and the odd Jaguar (after all the sign says "Luxury Apts."). We were hooked. However, over the more than 3 years we were there, some chinks in the "luxury" facade revealed themselves. The units are spacious, but the construction was quick and dirty, and some of the results of this include cracking drywall, noise from neigboring units, and drafty windows and doors- to the point where there is a cold breeze in the winter (Even with shrink-wrap plastic over the windows, we still move upstairs to the guest room during the winter where it stays warm. Of course in Summer, it stays hot up there no matter how much you run the AC). The maintenance is shoddy- when we moved in there were burn holes in the carpet in front of the fireplace as well as spots of paint on the carpet where they couldn't be bothered to lay down plastic.
Amenities are sparse- our last complex (in Virginia) had a pool with hot tub, indoor whirpool and steamroom, weight/excercise room, several racquetball and tennis courts, a carwash area with 3 hose bays, and several trash dumpsters spread throughout. Of these, Coventry Crossing has but a pool and only 1 dumpster for the whole complex. The management is erratic and sometimes onerous. They told us we must take down a birdfeeder because it was "attracting squirrels", and they did not accommodate us when we asked to add another phone line to our unit for my wife's home office. Recently they have been renting to people with 2 or 3 junker eyesore cars, not legally registered (one, an old rusting K-car with primer paint doors, has a NJ sticker from 1998), which never move and take up prime parking spots. It took some time for us to tire of these things- I would say if you only planned to stay a year or so, it would be fine. Much beyond that you will be longing to leave. For the rents they charge, they could be doing much better.
