Horribly Overpriced

I've been living at Korman now for a little over 2 years. I was ready to leave in March when my lease was up because the insanely small space was starting make me claustrophobic. The leasing office talked me into staying -- they offered a discount on one of the larger one bedroom apartments (524 sq ft is large'), so like a moron, I stayed. Big mistake! I saw heavy turnover in the leasing office -- there's someone new in there every month. The residents are supposed to be able to park in the spots around the building, but when I asked about a parking pass for my boyfriend's car (who moved into this bigger yet tinier apartment with me) they told me they don't really enforce it and it's merely a formality, unless I want to tack on another $100 bill every month to park in the underground garage (which floods when it rains heavily). And the clientele that live here! Last year I stood outside at 10pm at night with a back injury (in the extreme heat) because some idiot had thrown a lit cigarette down the trash chute and it set off the fire alarms. My apartment is in one of the curves of the building and you can hear people outside at night yelling with no respect of the other residents who are sleeping because they have to get up for work in the morning. Forget security! They did away with the 24-7 security staff, so there is no one there at night to tell these people to be quiet. They got rid of their coffee bar with Starbucks coffee because the greedy people in the building were taking more than their share.

Inside the apartment, there is maybe a 3ft x 3ft area of counter space and very limited cabinet space. Forget closet or storage space. However, my bedroom is a decent size but barely contains our furniture. The gas oven gets way too hot and burns everything, and my kitchen sink gets clogged almost on a daily basis. There are no cabinets below the sink in the bathroom, which is really inconvenient. Not to mention the walls have about 1000 coats of oil-based paint on them, and the cabinets do as well. They paint over the hinges -- they don't even remove the door! One of my outlets don't work but the maintenance staff insists that it does. I joined a gym because the exercise equipment is often broken -- right now the belts on the treadmills are very loose and someone could slip and fall, but the mgmt doesn't really care. Things take forever to get fixed by the maintenance staff, and often times the girls in the leasing office forget to put in the work orders. The laundry room is highway robbery (1.50 a load to wash and 1.50 to dry!) and your best bet is to do your laundry in the middle of the week because on the weekends its almost impossible to use the washers and dryers. Also, some of the residents seem to think that this building is a college dormatory and not an apartment building -- they are extremely nosy and one girl and her friends were hanging out outside my apartment door, listening to me being intimate with a man, and went and told everyone about it!

The neighborhood: If you walk 3 blocks on Emerald St towards 3rd St, you start to get a bit scared. When I lived on the 4th floor (I now live on the 2nd) I could hear gunshots from time to time. It's also too far from downtown to walk there.

Only plus side: The rent includes all your utilities plus HBO.

Bottom line: You are paying way too much rent for basically a shoebox of an apartment with zero storage space and a very small kitchen, and horrendous parking outside and on the side streets.
