The fight never ends...

We just finally moved out of this place because the office staff was so bad and we were really not happy with the place over the last year. Now we have a new problem:
They sent us a letter saying they were charging us for rent on 9/1/04 which was a typo since we moved-in in august 2006. Then they gave us a late fee for not paying it. Our lease ended aug 31st 2007 and they are claiming that they had to charge us this outrageous fee because we didn't turn in our keys and that is the only way they know if we've moved or not. The community manager told me on the phone that they sent a document to us that gave us notification we would have to pay a month's rent if we didn't return the keys but when we met with them they told us that there was no document that said anything like that. Furthermore it does not mention anything about returning the keys in the lease or in any addendum to the lease nor does it say that we have to give notice AFTER we left. We followed the lease's conditions for moving out but they are telling us that it doesn't matter what the lease says.
In our meeting the office manager actually made "faces" at us like a 6 year old child. I am outraged that someone could be so unprofessional. She also kept telling us that "The lease means whatever [we] think it means"... i don't even know what that is supposed to mean but i think she was trying to say that it meant what I interpretted it to mean... this is a LEGAL DOCUMENT! geeze. So she also admitted that although "[we] have NO LEGAL OBLIGATION to return the keys" she had to charge us because somehow we "Should have know that we needed to return them"!!!! She actually only used that one argument that we "should have known" even though there is not a single document that says we need to. This is my first apartment and I can honestly say I didn't know we had to and I can also say that it doesn't matter if i thought we did or not because THEY NEVER TOLD US we had to! One other point to mention is that they are trying to tell us they didn't know that we vacated but at the same time they already changed the locks, cleaned the carpets, cleaned the stove and are doing other repair. Why would they do all that stuff if they thought we didn't vacate' They keep trying to argue that we VACATED so they did that stuff AND that we DIDN'T VACATE so they have to bill us for a month. ''''
The maintenance staff is about the only good thing about this place. They would come very quickly and were very good at fixing problems with the units.
The safety is terrible because in the year that we lived there, there were several home invasions including one where an ex-steelers football player pistol-whipped a tenant and might have killed him if he hadn't escaped and called the cops. Additionally a murderer was caught there, I personally witnessed several drug deals and the cops were at the apartments on a regular basis. DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE!!!!!

contact the real estate commission, they should only be liable to charge you a fee for failure to return keys, usually the amount to make new keys, they change the locks upon move out anyway.... the management company is very inconisistent, also you might want to contact the fair housing commission
