Awesome place thus far...

My boyfriend and I *just* moved into Williamsburg barely a week ago. We had been looking for apartments since July, but all the other places that we looked at were extremely expensive. We currently pay a little over $820 per month for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, first-floor apartment. All services are included with the exception of electricity.
We've had a great experience thus far. On the day that we moved in, we were treated to an apartment that had had its carpets shampooed, nearly every surface cleaned or disinfected, the A/C already blasting, and every little detail in place, (i.e. things like hot water turned on, locks were recored, closets/windows open for inspection, even the oven was nuked with cleaner).
Let's start with the...
Pros:
-- Staff is very friendly and wonderful to work with. Maintenance is awesome, they know the ins and outs of all the apartments. The guy who took me on my walk-through saw a piece of stained carpet in our closet and was disgusted enough that he promised to replace it for us himself.
-- I have yet to hear my neighbors to either side of us, which is amazing because they both have at least 2 kids apiece. We can occasionally hear our upstairs neighbor walking up his stairs and taking a shower in the morning, but otherwise, that's it. While on the subject of noise, we also happen to live close to I-81. We can't hear any of the traffic.
-- Grounds are very well-kept and clean. We actually have a little play area behind us for the kids that live there.
-- Easy access to dumpsters and mailboxes.
-- Easy access to all entertainment: movies, shopping, restaurants, etc.
-- Washer and Dryer are great. I'm confused at some of these residents who complain about Williamsburg jipping them out of washers/dryers. Our Williamsburg housing contact told us the first day we decided to tour about all of these details.
And then we have the...
Cons (these are very minor):
-- Cable outlets are in the closet. However, I also acknowledge that these apartments are almost 33 years old, (heck, my PARENTS actually lived there before I was born), and the design itself is very old. Our cable is fine though, we just found a longer cord to run on the floor.
-- Furnace sounds like a rocket blasting off whenever it kicks on. Granted, it's extremely powerful, but we have to jack the TV volume up whenever it's on.
-- Some of the carpet/cabinets/vinyl are obviously old. The previous tenants had a toilet leak which left a black stain all over the bathroom floor. Maint. scrubbed it as best as they could, obviously. We put a trash can over it. We used shelf paper on the cabinets because they are starting to chip on the inside, (although I should note that they HAVE started replacing some).
-- Parking. My boyfriend and I moved in on a weekend, which should have been the busiest time for parking. We still find spots quite easily, but then again, winter is around yet.
All in all, I've thoroughly enjoyed myself so far. I figure that I'll write again in a few months to review my comments.
Conclusion: This is a great starter apartment for those who can afford it. We are planning on living here for a year or two, and then moving onto a townhouse.

Thank you very much for your response, anonymous. To be honest, we haven't had a chance to hook up the surround sound yet, but when we do, I'm sure it will be more than adequate. =)
The cabinets and carpet aren't bad at all--merely, I was just pointing out that hey, these apartments are kind of old, so if you're expecting brand-new wood trim, carpet, etc., you need to lower your expectations a little. However, they are aging gracefully. =)
Thanks again for the well wishes--I'm sure we'll be happy here.

welcome to the neighborhood! my fiance and i have lived here in a townhouse since march 2005, and although we're really hoping to buy a home sometime soon, this was a good place for us to start. we're on the end, so we only have one set of neighbors, but they also have children and we don't hear much from them either.
the loud a/c and heat? get surround sound! it doesn't block out the noise completely, of course, but it does help (not to mention that the heat is paid, which definitely makes the sound a bit easier to deal with.) when we moved in, it was still freezing out and the heat didn't work--they came immediately and fixed it.
i am sure if your cabinets, carpet, etc, have more wear and tear than most, they will happily replace it when they can, i haven't had that problem so far. in the years i've lived here, they replaced my refrigerator and dishwasher, and also fixed my sink, no questions asked. pretty much any problem you have, they will try to fix it, and asap.
we have a small washer-dryer unit in the bathroom, and it's just fine for the two of us, so no complaints from us either. i'm not a laundromat kind of girl so i will take what i can get!
parking can be a problem sometimes, especially on weekends at the townhouses, and we have both made management aware of it when it gets bad enough. i haven't heard many complaints about the parking at the apartments, though. my fiance's car battery has to be charged often, so we try to keep our cars next to each other as much as possible, and it's been a handful of times that this has been a problem for us. once we had to ask our neighbor to wake her roommate up to move her car, which was kind of embarrassing for us and probably annoying for her, but it was easily fixable.
the annoyances i've experienced here are few compared to other places i've lived. i sometimes hesitate to call when i have a problem because they're so good about stuff that i feel bad having to complain. but if they can do something about it, they will. if not, there are always other ways around it.
hope you're happy here for your stay here!
