Appearances Can Be Deceiving

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
My family lived in a three bedroom apt. at Briarcrest. When I first viewed the apartment and the property I was impressed. The apartment had a large living area, the rooms were a nice size and we would be living directly across from the Reeses plant with the smell of chocolate in the air. My excitement was short lived. The three bedroom apartment we occupied had only one full bath and a half bath with a shower stall. It was equipped with only a small apartment size stackable washer and dryer. Its almost impossible to keep up with the laundry accumulation from a baby and two adults with a washer and dryer that small. The tile in the bathrooms and kitchens looked like it had been there since the place was built in the 70's and the windows, huge and poorly sealed, couldn't have been any newer than the tile. Our water heater, also circa 1970's was shared by our neighbors, a family of four, who also occupied a three bedroom aparment. With seven people sharing the same OLD water heater I learned very quickly if I heard one of my neighbors in the shower it would be at least a half hour after they were done until I could take a shower and have the warm water last the duration. In the winter the bedrooms were cold and drafty due to the previously mentioned windows and the electric heat pushed our electric bill to a minimum $125 a month.
We felt all too close to our neighbors. Insulation between apartments was so thin we could hear everything from footsteps in the hall to their children singing their ABC's in the bathtub.
When our lease came up for renewal, we were concerned about whether or not we would be able to afford the rent. Many of our neighbors had already begun to move out due to rent increases ranging anywhere from $50-$100. We considered ourselves fortunate when our rent increase was at the lower end of that range. A leasing consultant actually visited us in our apartment and promised the rent increases were necessary for improvements in the community and we, like other current residents, would be reaping the benefits upon renewal of our lease. Were were promised a new water heater, new larger washer and dryer and new carpet, among other things. The only promise actually fulfilled by the community, was the new water heater and that was prompted by a none too friendly phone call from me to the rental office after freezing my tail off in a shower that turned ice cold 2 minutes after I got in.
Suffice to say, I now have a very negative opinion of not only Briarcrest, but Horst Property Management as a whole. I would certainly never live in one of their properties again, and I would strongly encourage anyone else who was considering a move to look elswhere.
