Full Story:

An Abington woman and her boyfriend were behind bars Monday for the execution-style slaying and attempted dismemberment of the woman s father.

The Black Friday murder of 46-year-old Marc D. Rubin, who shared an apartment with his daughter at the Colonade Apartments on the 100 block of Old York Road, was sparked by a phone conversation in which the father yelled at his daughter for an unspecified reason, according to Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.

Christina Rubin, 22, and her 20-year-old boyfriend, Jeffrey W. Leinheiser of the 100 block of Cedar Street, Jenkintown, are being held without bail in the county prison following their weekend arrests on first-degree murder and related charges.

Daniel Dougherty, 19, of the 300 block of Greenwood Avenue, Abington, a friend of Leinheiser s who police said helped dispose of the body, was charged with tampering with evidence, abuse of corpse and conspiracy. He also was taken to the county prison when he could not post $25,000 cash bail.

This case gives true meaning to the expression that truth is stranger than fiction, said Ferman at a press conference to announce the arrests.

Rubin, a graduate student studying psychology at Chestnut Hill College, was reduced to tears following an argumentative phone call with her father the week of Nov. 17.

Leinheiser, who was there during the call, and Rubin immediately began plotting on how they could kill the father, said Ferman.

About 11 p.m. on Nov. 28, Rubin let Leinheiser into the apartment and gave him her .357-magnum revolver. Leinheiser then allegedly shot her father once in the back of the head, execution style, as he was sleeping, according to Ferman.

Fearing that someone might have heard the shot, the two left the apartment with the father s body in it, staying in the area to listen to the news to hear if anyone had discovered the killing, said Ferman.

While away, the two hatched a plot to dismember the body, put the body parts in trash bags and then dump the bags down the trash chute at the high-rise apartment building, according to Ferman.

Rubin purchased a chain saw and other equipment on Dec. 5 and they returned to the apartment where Leinheiser tried to cut up the now badly decomposing body, said Ferman. Unsuccessful in sawing through the bones, the pair went out and purchased a rug in which they rolled up the body after wrapping it in plastic and duct tape, sad Ferman.

Leinheiser got Dougherty to help him carry the body down nine flights of stairs and out to Rubin s car. Leinheiser and Dougherty drove to New Jersey with the intention of renting a boat and dumping the body at sea, according to Ferman. When no one would rent them a boat, Leinheiser and Dougherty dumped the body in a wooded area in Atlantic County on Dec. 8.

Rubin allegedly paid both men $1,000 apiece to dispose of the body although Leinheiser told authorities he had only received $500, according to the criminal complaint.

One of the more remarkable things about this case is the fact that all of these events could take place inside a very busy apartment complex where no one noticed or heard anything - everything from the gunshot that no one heard to the chain saw that no one heard to the smell that was emanating from that apartment, said Ferman.

A deer hunter found Rubin s badly decomposed body, still wrapped in dark plastic and in a rug with silver and black duct tape, that same day it was dumped in Hamilton Township, N.J. The body was not there earlier that day when the hunter used the same path, according to authorities.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Theodore F. L. Housel, who called the killing a gruesome patricide at Monday s press conference, added, Now we know people come to the Shore for all sorts of reasons, to get rid of bodies

Because the body was so decomposed, New Jersey authorities turned to the FBI for help in identifying it. The FBI told New Jersey authorities Thursday that the dead man was Marc Rubin, and Abington police were contacted.

Abington police, obtaining a search warrant for the Rubin apartment, determined the murder took place inside the apartment. They also recovered the chain saw, which still had what appeared to be hair, blood, tissue and a piece of fabric matching the father s shorts on it, the complaint said.

Ironically, the gun used in the slaying was in the possession of Horsham police.

Horsham police on Dec. 9 responded to the Day s Inn on Route 611 after receiving a report of an accidental shooting of a gun.

The couple staying in the room, Rubin and Leinheiser, reported that they had found a mattress with a bullet hole in it in their room. The two denied any knowledge of how the bullet hole was made but police seized Rubin s gun, a .357 revolver for which she had a permit, according to the complaint.

That gun turned out to be the murder weapon, said Ferman.

Noting that some of these events played out like a comedy of errors by the three suspects, Ferman said, No matter how intelligent someone is, no matter how much background they have in psychology, no matter how much education they have, most people out there are not experienced killers.

It is certainly fair to say everything they did was botched but the bottom line is that they took a man s life, said Ferman. While it took law enforcement time to identify the victim and catch the suspects, that has been done.

Ironically, the only person who would have missed the victim was the very person who took his life and that is truly sad, said Ferman.
