What a waste. I'm counting the days until our lease is up.

The air conditioning units are inefficient. My summer electric bill runs between $150-$160/month and my tiny, one bedroom unit remains at a constant 83-87 degrees. God forbid I should cook, do laundry, or run the dishwasher in the summer--the inside temperature pushes 90 degrees.

With one bedroom window and one sliding glass door on the same side of the apartment, we can't rely on Mother Nature to cool our apartment, because there is no fresh air breeze-through.

Right now, our air conditioner is broken, but a pompous woman in the leasing office will not dispatch maintenance over the weekend because 90 degree inside temperatures are not deemed an emergency.

If the summer months are hell, the winter months are hell, frozen over. Maintenance was nowhere to be found after the snow and ice storm on Valentine's Day 2007. They finally emerged, a few days after the storm, and attempted to clear the roads of the snow and ice that had already crusted over. It was impossible to enjoy the peaceful presence of snow on the ground because the solitude was punctuated with sounds of tires squealing as residents made an effort to move their cars from their parking spot. The parking lots were, essentially, one big ice cube tray. I cannot be the only resident that missed a few days of work because I was snowed in.

The paint is cheap. The carpets are cheap. The balcony paint is peeling and chipping away.

In my building alone, I've witnessed 9 residents move in and move out in the 15 months we've been here. At first I thought they were moving on to bigger and better places--perhaps they had purchased a home. It has become clear to me that the high turnover comes from customer dissatisfaction, plain and simple.
