Safety, Mold, Efficency, Courtesy

The apartment I have rented for almost a year at Paoli Place has been problematic from the start. I believe the apartment never should have been rented to us in the first place, but in the name of making money, it was. The former tenant only lived there a year, and did not renew the lease. I am also not renewing the lease. This quick turn around of tenants should be a warning sign to Westover company, sadly it is not.
I could list all of the issues my apartment has had over the one year I have been there, but I will not. I will stick with the main points. First of all, the safety within the apartments is lacking. The area is a safe one in genereal, but anything could happen anywhere. Yet the door leading to my apartment house is always left, wide open, with a bucket holding it fully open revealing all of the property the entire building has in the storage bins in the cages in the basement. In addtion, it would be easy for someone to walk in and stand in the nook beside the stairs, or in the boiler/maintenance room, completely hidden until a tenant walked by. There are many children living in the building, so this is very scary. I recently was home from work and found out that the woman who works for the apartment complex, and sweeps the basement/laundry room is the one constantly leaving the door open (from 10 am until the tenants get home from work around 5pm!) She does this because the weather is warmer and she is hot while cleaning. I have complained but to no avail.
But this is certainly not the worst of the issues. Currently my apartment is being overrun by mold. This may seem like a small thing, but it is so bad that there is mold growing all over my kitchen wall, and in two closets. In the one closet there is black mold growing which is very toxic. The bedroom closet is so bad that there is an overpowerinf, horrible smell and I can not sleep in the bedroom. I understand that problems will occur while living in an apartment complex. However, the key is that the landlord, or faceless corporation as Westover is, is respectful of your need for a safe, clean, liveable space. However, at Paoli Place this is not the case.
When you call the Paoli Place office to report a maintenance issue you will get one of two responses: a lie, or a miserable attitude. Let's start with the first. The front office has lied to me concerning many problems in my apartment. The office person has told me things would be fixed promptly, only for a few days later to have to call back to ask if someone can at least come out to look at the problem. At this point, it becomes more like you are begging them to send someone to see the leak, the bugs, the mold, whatever the case may be. The office has also lied to me about the professionals they have on staff. At the time we moved in, they said they has an exterminator, however, later when we called to utilize that exterminator were told tthe maintenance man was the exterminator. When the issue went beyond this man's knowledgebase, Paoli Place admitted that they would need to find a real exterminator (something they claimed to have had when we signed our lease!) For some reason the whole process took weeks. I am not sure why, but at Paoli Place, tasks you could accomplish in a day or two , takes three to four weeks. And when they are done, they are done in the most horrid, and cheapest way possible.
Another problem is that when you call for something to be fixed, and no one comes out as you are told they will, and you call to ask why, the staff gets very rude and angry to you. My complaints are really ones with the comapny who owns the apartment, but if you tell the office staf for maintence men about your frustrations, they are very rude to you. I have been told by the maintence guy that I am a "bunch of names he can not say or will get fired", for telling him I thought it was unreasonable for the apartment complex not to take care of a bug infestation before 4 weeks! The people who work here are lazy and happy that the company's motto is to procrastinate, procrastinate, and procrasinate, until they have to do the least amount of work to keep the rent check flowing in!
Living at Paoli Place is like having a second job. If you are committed to calling everyone from the apartment office to the main office, faxing letters, documenting all the problems, then MAYBE someone will care enough to temporarily attach a band-aid to your problem, and even then its a guessing game.
The mold in my apartment is still growing, and no one is coming out to look at it. I have made two calls and faxed a letter. I know this is only the beginning. The company has known there is a water problem in my apartment for a few years now. There was a massive flood in there last year, and rotten wood. The rapidly growing mold is a sign there is a bigger moisture issue. I feel bad for the next tenant who gets conned into living here when I move out in a month. This is m warning to them!
