Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
This apartment was so nice! We are almost finished with our 1-year lease and have had so few problems. The apartments are extremely clean-looking with large bathrooms and very high ceilings. They are modern looking with beautiful bright white kitchen cabinets and fairly-new appliances. When we moved in, there were a few minor things that were taken care of within the first few weeks (broken refrigerator - they gave us a new one, broken stove burner - I fixed it, leaking bathroom sink - they fixed the next day, broken air conditioner - fixed within 1-2 weeks). Also, we had to clean everything when we moved in because it was pretty dusty in there, but the walls were freshly painted and the carpets had been cleaned. The location is great. It is a very safe neighborhood within walking distance of a park, many restaurants, and many up-scale stores. Morton's Steakhouse is located in the building, which is awesome if you can afford to go there (it is about $150 for two people to have dinner). It is a very expensive neighborhood, but really gives you a good city feel. There is a subway entrance on the corner and a beautiful view of City Hall. Parking is a real issue, though. I had to park about 2 blocks away in a garage (where I felt very safe) and paid over $200 per month to park my car. The door-people in the building are so nice and friendly. They are always willing to chit-chat, give you directions, call a cab for you, etc. It feels safer, too, knowing that there is a door-person downstairs 24/7 monitoring who comes and goes. Basically, the upsides of the apartment are that it is safe and clean with absolutely no bugs or mice and you can trust the maintenance people. A huge upside is the cool location. Everyone that comes to visit us can't believe our neighborhood! I feel like I can honestly go on and on about the good points of our apartment (including our quiet neighbors!). The downsides are that the apartments are expensive and pretty small. If you make wise use of your space, though, they don't seem as little. Certain apartments have nice views and a lot of natural light, while others (like ours) have zero natural light because they are located on the inside of the U-shape of the building. I can't speak for the apartments that face the streets, but the ones on the inside of the building are super quiet. We rarely hear car horns honking and sirens are not frequently heard either. A minor problem for us was the laundry room. It has just one washer ($1.75/load) and one dryer ($1.75/load) per floor. They are kind of a rip-off in that they are smaller than the average washer and the dryer doesn't dry the clothing all the way, which means you have to pay to run it through a second time, and sometimes even a third time. One thing we did not like about this apartment was the inconvenience, but this is something that is more against Philly than against the actual apartment building. While moving in and out, you must use the back alley entrance. This is fine and does not seem unsafe in the daytime, but there are a few homeless people behind the building. Also, it is an upscale neighborhood and so, there are homeless people on most of the corners and they ask you for money and/or coffee every time you walk past. I think this is typical of the city, though, so I don't really hold that against the apartment building either. We would love to stay in the same building and just get a larger apartment, but the prices are too high. Also, you must get Direct TV, but we enjoyed that! It was a hassle for us to set up our internet because the windows don't open - we eventually went with Verizon, though. The bills weren't too expensive, but were way more than the management company estimated them to be. We paid about $100 per month for electric, give or take $15. One last thing, this building is the old Stock Exchange building, so the floors seem to be concrete under the carpet, which means you NEVER hear neighbors above or below you. Overall, we really enjoyed living in the city and getting the city experience, but the small size of our apartment, the inconvenient commute, and the expense of living in Center City are causing us to move. If you plan to live here, just be sure to inspect the apartment before you move in and have them fix everything before your move-in date. Hope you are as happy here as we are!
