Very good value for Center City

I have mixed feelings about 2400 Chestnut. I think it is a great value, taking into consideration the size of the apartments, the gym, and parking. Parking is the best thing about this building. For $79.99 per month, you can park in the garage that is below the building. There is an elevator and stairs connecting the garage on each floor to the lobby of the building. As a female, I feel extremely safe with this set up. First of all, the garage has a 24 hour guard. Second, I love that when it is raining or snowing, I don't have to go outside to get my car. The garage gets parked up at times, but I have always been able to find a spot on one of the 4 floors.
The doormen are extremely friendly and I feel very safe because they always call up when you have visitors. Even when my boyfriend comes over, they will call up, so I usually call down to let them know he is coming. The gym is pretty nice. It has 4 treadmills and 4 precor machines and a good amount of free weights and machines. It is perfect for me, but can get crowded after work around between 5-7.
Most residents are Penn grad students and there are a lot of different ethnicities represented. Generally, the residents are not friendly. I don't know any of my neighbors and I have lived her for one year. I did just renewed my lease for a second year, but it was because the parking is so low! It is impossible to find such cheap parking elsewhere. The location is not the best however. Especially for someone who doesn't have a car. The nearest food stores are on 21st St. and you pretty much have to walk 4 blocks to get to any decent restaurants/stores. Besides that, it is only 5 blocks or so to Rittenhouse Sq. And, it is really easy to get cabs because the doorman will put on a cab light and the cabs drive right up to the door. Excellent in bad weather!
I think my least favorite thing about the building is the location. Because of the way Chestnut Street runs, when you are driving from Center City or pretty much anywhere other than West Philly (Penn or Drexel) or coming from 76 E, it is a pain to get to the front of the building. In order to park in the garage, you have to drive up Walnut, Market or JFK and maneuver your way around to Chestnut. It can be a pain, especially in rush hour.
In all, this building has been good to me. I am not much of a city person and I am very reliant upon my car. Therefore, I drive out of the city to do my food shopping. I would definitely recommend this building to young professionals or grad students. I renewed for one more year, but after that, I am out of here. I think I will always miss that garage....
