2400 Chestnut is a great place to live - particularly for graduate and professional school students, but for everyone else as well. The size and location of the building make it very convenient - it is less than a 30 minute walk to a large part of Center City (definitely the Rittenhouse area) and also to all of UPenn, and because the building is so large and has so many students, they run a shuttle to and from Penn (with a few stops per day in Center City), which is very nice.

If you are on Penn campus late at night, you don't have to worry about transportation home - the East PennBus runs until around midnight, and it will stop right at the side of the building to drop you off. Other conveniences in the building include free cable and free laundry on each floor. There's also a gym in the building - it's nothing special, but the machines work, and you don't have to leave the building to work out - which is great for those that lack motivation :)

The staff is amazing - all of the doormen will know you (some even by name) within a few weeks of moving in, and they are always friendly and helpful. They won't let anyone up without your permission, and will call even if it's the same friend/boyfriend/etc. that you always have over. For women living alone, this is definitely the ultimate protection. In fact, recently one of the doormen stopped someone from following me into the building - the man couldn't answer who he was visiting, and he left the building. Given that there are many reports of men following women up to their apartments, I am very happy I live in a building where the doormen pay attention and don't just let everyone upstairs.

The only negative things I can think of have already been said in other reviews - sometimes the heat and hot water are a little fussy, and the electric bill seems a little steep for the size of the apartment. Neither of these things is anything major, though, and it wouldn't keep me from deciding to live here if I had to make the choice again.

When I look at reviews for other places, even nearby (and some more expensive), I can't believe I live in the same area as these buildings. I've never had any problems with cockroaches or rats, the apartment was incredibly clean when I moved in, and the management immediately took care of any problems I found with my apartment (i.e. the oven wasn't plugged in for some reason). I pay $1185 a month for my 570 sq. ft. studio apartment, plus around $50-100 for electric, and $100 a month for parking (which is safe and well-lit). It may be a bit pricey to pay over $1000 for a studio, but I'm incredibly happy with the apartment and don't regret paying what I do for it.

Overall, you definitely get what you pay for with this building - a very safe, clean, well-kept place to live, with a lot of conveniences and (if you live toward the top floors) the best view in town, particularly in the East direction. The apartments are spacious (lots of closet space!) and they definitely feel like home. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for somewhere reasonable in Center City, or somewhere close to Penn but on the safer side of town.

Random question- how are the elevators? I've heard great things about the building but just want to be sure I won't have to worry about getting stuck (yep, I'm claustrophobic. Not severely, but really don't like tiny, sketchy or s-l-o-w elevators that have a track record of unscheduled stops.) :)

To Anonymous asking about elevators - I just moved out of 2400 after living there for 3 years.. I had never experience / heard of the elevators getting stuff. There are a total of 3 elevators in the building, and typically the waiting time is minimal. Does get a little slow around the summer / moving time, when folks are moving in and out.. and taking more elevator time than normal. However, that's expected and the situation everywhere in the city. Overall elevators are good.
