A Nightmare!
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 6/24/2002
Years at this apartment: 1991 - 1995
Would you like a little history' Building was filled w/elderly residents who had been good tenants there for 30-50 yrs. In order to entice "yuppies" from 1991-1992, the management company raised all of the rents to force these tenants in "good standing" out. These folks were just like your own grandmom, aunt, or uncle. By the time I left in 1995, most of these people were gone (either found dead in their apartments or taken out by sons and daughters who found them in poor mental states due to the ill-treatment and pressure of being forced out. The place was crawling with mice. (Mice living in the walls are impossible to eradicate!!). The "amenities" included in the high rent/s: a tiny shuttle bus into Center CIty. This bus was broken sometimes for more than a month! Another time, the staff decided to go on a hay ride to Amish country and to hell with the tenants! The building management decided to take out the steam heat and install heat pumps (air conditioning units that spit out heat much like an over-sized hair dryer in the winter and because they had ordered the incorrect size, never worked as either air conditioners in the summer or as heaters!) They were electric and had to be left on continually in order to feel anything blowing out of them. Then you had to sit right in front of them. They were costly and one Christmas they sent up a repairman who just couldn't do anything to get the thing to work. Winter on the Parkway with NO HEAT! It happened too often. The mice were a constant health hazard..."visitors" all of the time and entire families of them. It was glue trap city! They decided to keep renovating so that they could keep a tax break going. It was under renovation for at least 4 years. They put tiny washers and dryers in closets and decided tenants should pay electric to use this "wonderful new amentity". They put in a fitness center with malfunctioning gymn equipment to keep attracting more young urban professionals. They had unauthorized non-union workers removing asbestos for the duration of the renovation. They had lots of noise from the union workers disputing with the non-union workers. They would rally around a huge iron fence in the back of the building and run tin cans along the fence every morning waking everyone. The building management did nothing to stop the noise. Any improvement with the place' Well, I don't see how it could be much better. I know it's under new maangement now.
If you had guests, they were allowed to sit in the lobby. Building management had huge urns of tropical stinkweeds. It looked like a gaudy funeral parlor. Only a tenant's guests were permitted to sit in the lobby area. The tenants were told they had a 15-min. limit or they would be ushered back to the elevator and away from the lobby area. Staff enjoyed yelling across the lobby to the older tenants. They didn't wish anyone to see the presence of anyone over 40 from their picture windows. This was called luxury living.
I can't wait for the day they condemn it and they have the implosion, I'll be on Kelly Drive in my front row seat. See you then!
