Overall not too bad

The apartment has character - my entire front wall is a floor-to-ceiling window that looks out on a church across the street. The windows really make the place. My apartment also has a washer/dryer in the unit (a great perk!) and hardwood floors. The location is fantastic; a block away from a great video rental store, not far from two groceries, two blocks to Rittenhouse Square and about as close to dead center city as you can get. For the most part, the neighborhood is very safe if you're numb to the occassional street person mumbling to himself outside your front door.

There are some drawbacks. The apartment itself is old - paint flecks on the hardwood flooring, and the utilities are a little run down. The refrigerator is older than me, and the oven looks like an E-Z bake, it's that small. The heat is inconsistent - poor insulation and it's very cold in the winter. Maintenance is just so-so. They'll occassionally forget to do something and it takes awhile to get anything done. For example, I lost my mailbox key a week and a half ago and I'm still waiting for them to make a copy. Also, you can forget about street parking anywhere around here, although there is a pay lot one block over.

This kind of stuff is par for the course in Philly renting. Overall the place is at least maintained a little - floors are vacuumed and the apartment was freshly painted when I moved in. Rent isn't cheap - $1050/month - but also not bad considering the awesome view and the location. Have I mentioned the floor-to-ceiling window' Without that, this would be a sorta crappy 1BR place. With the windows, it's a funky little pad that has some warts, but I'll remember this place fondly. Excellent apartment for a young professional or young couple.
