I lived here 2 years, most doorman are pretty friendly (I've had late late night conversations...)and so is the maintenance guy. I think he is overworked though, and some non-urgent stuff takes time to fix. The management however is another story, best to keep interaction with them to a minimum as you can directly leave maintenance requests with doorman.
People in building are a mix of students and seniors. The lobby is shabby but comfortable, at least it was ok for me as I don't like the spanking new hotel lobby look. And the same goes for the apartments...they are very spacious, the studio is the size of a one bedroom almost and they have a separate kitchen/eat in area. If you can negotiate the price down with Linda the leasing agent or ask for the first month free, it is a good deal. The lower floors can be noisy though as it is on the street. Depends on where you lived before though...in the city or the suburbs.
The best thing is that the water, heat and electricity is included though beware of the A/C charges in the summer. You can negotiate them down as well if you try. I had everything inclusive for $800.
In a nutshell, if you can put up with a slightly older building (though renovated) and a rude management (when you negotiate your lease) then the space and the location of this place cannot be beat!
By the way the management is Michael Singer Real Estate and if you want to check them out just google them and the UPenn report card of the Center City landlords will give you a year by year rating of all amenities.
