i've rented in nyc and la, so i'm writing this review looking in retrospect at my college years at chestnut hall. here are the pluses:
building was alright, all utilities (water, electric, gas, and trash) paid was great, 3 laundry rooms per floor is great, ms. martha definitely a plus...
now for the minuses:
management was effin horrible! woody was by far THE MOST DIFFICULT PERSON i have EVER dealt with. and i'm talking ever, like, if you look back through your life and try to recall your most hated classmate, colleague, teacher or boss, i will bet you a month's rent that you'd find woody (woodrow schaeffer, the old manager) more obnoxious, more condescending, more uncompromising, more uncaring, more caustic, more arrogant, than all those people combined.
now for the redeeming factor:
as of my graduation, woody has left the building and chestnut hall is now under new management. i do hope they turn out to be competent at the very least, if not--dare i say it--friendly. the building really deserves better: for such a great location, decent price (with utilities), and good amenities, this should be THE place to live for penn students...
note: about noise. i found insulation from room to room fantastic, but from room to hallway was quite bad. the worst thing about noise is the bars outside, especially on sansom with blarney's stone and the frat houses. i seriously considered throwing molotov cocktails out of my window at them a coupla times, but my better half convinced me out of a lifetime in prison... but i hope that at least gives you an idea of how bad the noise is from the drunk-ass frat boys who ruin every night's rest on ur thursdays, fridays, and saturdays.
