screwed over by managment

after putting up with mice, roaches, windows that you could only open 2 inches, a 4 week wait to get our toilet fixed, missing packages, a crappy constantly broken gym, and numerous other problems me and my girlfriend finally escaped this hole of despair. We had thought that perhaps we were finally free. So we never received the safety deposit, small price to pay for getting out of that place, right' WRONG! three weeks ago, 6 months after moving out mind you, we receive a letter from a collection agency saying we owe park towne 900 dollars. Instead of sending us a bill to our new address (of course they deny we left this with them) or perhaps calling us, they simply refered us to a collection agency that informed us we had 90 days to pay or they would go to work on our credit. Of course, when you are trying to charge people money that they don't owe, this is probably the best tactic. Parke towne claims that in spite of the well documented fact that we were on a year long lease that ended at the end of july, they failed to receive our keys so they assumed that we had continued to reside in our apartment. All this, of course, in spite of the fact we gave them the pre 60 day notice that they require (even if you have a lease), showed up twice for walk throughs of the apartment only to be stood up by them, and, naturally, returned the keys exactly in the manner that they requested. No problem, right' make a call, straiten out the matter, and continue with life.... WRONG! When I went in to meet with them they gave lip service to fixing my problems, but then never did and never got back to me. Ive called multiple times, left messages, etc. and its been 3 weeks with no response, so tomorrow I head back to try again. RIDICULOUS! DO NOT MOVE IN HERE! DO NOT MOVE IN HERE! LOOK around and you will find a cheaper place that wont screw you over.

This SAME exact thing happened to me and my roomate a few months ago. We moved out of our apartment at Parktown in July of 2007. In January of 08, we received a letter from a collection agency stating that we owed them $1500. The same exact scam.... they said they never received our keys, went into the apartment 3 weeks later and saw that we were no longer there, and pro-rated us for 3 weeks rent, parking, and utilities. What a scam. We turned in our keys on time, gave them a forwarding address, and contact information as well. All of this was somehow "lost". We called and called and called and called, but they screen their calls, and do not return messages.
We were able to have most of the charges reversed by threatening to Sue. Ask to speak to the property manager, and ask him if he is the person that you should have your attorney send a letter to. This is a scam, so they will back down when you threaten to take this to court. I know how you feel.... best of luck to you.

It is actually really sad how money hungry this complex has gotten and here is my suggestion as to why this is.....I think they are spending way to much money on trying to make this place nicer and hiking up the rents ...in reality...they are not doing agreat job with renovations and no one wants to live here....the people who can afford to live here will not because they can afford nicer places in the city with nicer managment and even nicer security guards (They are always yelling at someone it is actually really sad)....my point is this really...Park towne is trying to get ahead but in reality they are failing...I am plannin to move out in 2 months and if they try the same bull ---- as they did with you guys I will raise hell...sorry for the rambling but am just fed up with park towne ...I have been living here for four years and irronically when they feel like they are making this community better I am feeling like it is my last....oh and by the way the same exact thing happened to my friends who moved out in August

I wrote a review on here before about the same stuff. WE need to do something. This sucks how they screwed us all so much and get away with it. I evenhad the old money manager guy send me a report before he left so that they couldn't screw us. Yet, they did it anyway and just didn't return phone calls. SOmething must be done with these people!

This review and the responses to it makes me so nervous - my fiance and I are moving out in May of this year and I was nervous to begin with that something would happen that would be detrimental, and after hearing this I'm even MORE nervous. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make sure this does not happen to us?
It's so sad that a complex that has the potential to be so nice - the location, the pool, the convenience store - is so incredibly crappy.

UPDATE:
I have finally resolved the park towne issue and they did wind up removing the innappropriate charges. In conclusion: if they mess with you and you are in the right, you need to consult an attorney or be extremely vigilant in dealing with the issue. Get every communication in writing and only deal with them via certified mail that they have to respond to. To avoid all of these problems, make sure that you obtain and keep documentation of your lease, 60 day notice, and a recepit for the return of your key. I would also suggest doing the walkthrough with them and obtaining some kind of written receipt of that as well. Further, I would not recommend dealing with the collection agency at all until you have resolved things with park towne. in my case they lied to me and bullied me to attempt to get me to pay. some people over there are reasonable, but they are all used to dealing with dirt bags so they pull out pretty much every trick in the book. good luck!
