If this is luxury, then I'm the Pope.

My boyfriend and I were charmed by these "luxury" lofts. Cosmetically, they are beautiful -- exposed brick, brand-new appliances, gorgeous hardwood floors ... we thought we'd gotten a great deal.
However, the lack of quality quickly became apparent. (We've only been here for two months.) I could go on and on about the shoddy workmanship (our closet door fell off, tub broke, faucet handle fell off, sink leaks, lightswitches and power outlets installed cheaply and poorly, etc.) but our major issue with this building is the noise.
Before we moved in, I read these same reviews. "Oh, it can't be THAT bad," I thought. "Perhaps these people are just light sleepers, or overly sensitive. It just CAN'T be as noisy as they say it is."
I was wrong. While, as I stated before, the apartments are cosmetically beautiful, structurally they are poorly and cheaply constructed with seemingly NO consideration for the people who would one day live in them. The walls' Two quarter-inch sheets of drywall is all that separates us from our next-door neighbors. Upstairs and down' One level of two-by-sixes with the aforementioned hardwood slapped hastily on top of it (we've only been there two months and a couple of the boards are coming up.) NO insulation. Not even a measly, half-hearted attempt at soundproofing.
The 14-foot ceilings that my boy and I were ga-ga over' Function as an echo chamber. The walls between apartments may as well not be there. We can hear our neighbors sneezing, eating, talking (the other day we found out that they'd run out of breadcrumbs). We can tell when the icemaker in their freezer drops ice cubes. We can hear every squeal, shriek and "OhmiGAWD" from the sorority girls who live downstairs (she has long phone conversations with her mother, too). We can hear their Chihuahua yipping at all hours. We don't need to watch the news -- because if our neighbors are watching it, we can hear everything!
And the people above us. A pack of musicians, early 20s, who roll music equipment around in the middle of the night. They thunder across the floors. They rap out drumbeats on their floor -- our ceiling. From 11 pm until dawn. And there's not a lot we can do about it.
Forgive my rage -- I haven't slept well in months. The people in the building, well, they're just being people. Just being themselves. Can't blame them for that. If the building were of better quality, perhaps the noise issues wouldn't exist.
So, if you decide to move in here, do so at your own risk. We won't be here much longer, God willing. And yes, the elevator also sucks, as does the sketchy-ass alleys where we have to go to check the mail.
