BEST TO AVOID

I've lived in a UCH apartment for a couple of years now, and it has not been a good experience. The apartment looked vrey nice and is in a great area - I was very happy when I took it. Shortly after I moved in, however, I noticed small rodents running around my apartment -- I went to the UCH office to ask them to do something about it. A woman was there ahead of me complaining that they had come to her apartment to get rid of /her/ rodents by patching up the gap between the floor and the baseboard (this is how they get in) but they hadn't moved out the fridge or stove or anything to patch behind those things, and rodents were still romping around. UCH did not fix my apartment either, so I finally had to move the stove etc. myself and patch up the gaps with caulking.

My buzzer did not work when I moved in - I asked them to fix it and they said Yes, we've fixed it. I invited friends over - they couldn't get in. I asked UCH to fix it again - same deal. I asked a third time - same deal.

Now that I'm moving UCH keeps coming over and coming in to my apartment to show it to people -- without giving any advance notice. They do knock, but if you don't come right away they just come in. I've been in the bathroom when they've come in, and spending some intimate time with my boyfriend ... there have been a number of awkward moments and it's not cool to come out of the bathroom or shower to find strangers in your apartment. When I complained, UCH said that I had given them permission to do this (I hadn't) and that they had the right to come in when they wanted.

On top of everything else, when I went into the basement recently to do laundry (there are only 2 washers in a building with about 80 people), I saw a rat. I asked UCH to do something about it, and they said that they would send an exterminator, but I've seen rat leavings and rats in the basement since then, and there are missing panes in the basement windows which haven't been replaced.

Bottom line: nice enough apartment and great location, but not safe or sanitary or private. You will not be treated with respect.

I've had similar experiences. They enter completely unnanounced. Luckily, when I rented the apartment it had a chain-lock on the door already (since their lease forbids putting a chain lock on the door UNLESS there is already one on...which there was). They almost never fix anything, and when they DO fix something it breaks again a few hours later. UCH will NEVER do anything about rodents. I realized this as well and took it upon myself to move all the major appliances and close all gaps as well. I'll still see a mouse every few months or so, which really bothers. In the elevator, when it's actually working, you can look out the side and see through giant holes into other people's apartments. It's pretty scary. I'm terrified of getting stuck in that elevator some day, but carrying heavy things up several flights of stairs is just impossible for me. I can't wait to find a better place!
