I have lived at Upsal Gardens for many years, and while I acknowledge many of the other reviewer's issues as completely valid, I feel I must give a positive review. First of all, for the most part, the other tenants can't be beat. It is a professional, highly educated and interesting group of people who live at UA, and that is saying a lot. There is an overwhelming number of professors, graduate students, medical students, and young professionals- and now, in the last few years, a big smattering of hip, diverse and fun young families with kids.

The building is nearly 80 years old and has a lot of character; most of the apartments have much of their original pre-WWII elements. As for the maintenance people, some are less skilled than others- but the senior members of the crew are great. When you call with a valid problem, it gets fixed. And if it is not fixed perfectly, and trust me, this happens a lot- you call again. Folks, it's FREE. It's part of your rent, so live with it. Bugs and mice' What can I say. I have lived in this area all my life and been in hundreds of apartments and houses- and even the nicest, most modern and/or well-kept places have these problems. Once again, the management addresses the problem pretty well, in my opinion.

The fact remains that this is APARTMENT LIVING. There's some noise, some cracks, some old paint. But there are also cedar closets, ceramic tiled bathrooms, hardwood floors, a free well-maintained pool, gorgeous grounds and ivy covered brick walls. And I have found that with the landlady, if you maintain a slightly sugary demeanor, it will serve you well. Not to say that the people she has mistreated deserved it, because as far as I know, they don't- she can be unreasonable. But sometimes, a little extra fakey-nicey behavior can go a long way. And when she is nice, she is REALLY nice, and will do you small but important favors that she quite frankly doesn't have to do. Rules may be made to be broken, but you can't very well get angry when they are followed.
