Worse With Age

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2009
I began living here in 2004. The rent was reasonable, the neighborhood was generally friendly, and my apartment was well maintained. As each year progresses, things just seem to get worse. At least twice a month, you'll receive notification that, "The water will be shut off from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.," or some other unbelievably inconvenient time. Taking a shower during the normal morning hours is a mad dash to finish before your shampoo turns to icicles in your hair. I could swear that the roof has been replaced 5 times. There's always hammering, crashing and assorted machinery noises, if not on top of my building, then the buildings adjacent.
Each year, my rent has been raised by $40-$50 per month, for no apparent reason. Rather than rewarding me for continuing my stay with their complex, the rates continue to rise. Currently, it is not worth the price I am paying for a one-bedroom with no washer/dryer and outdated appliances (including an incredibly noisy air conditioner positioned directly above the jack for the TV, which means keeping cool and watching TV becomes a battle of volume).
That being said, the majority of the staff seems to be very friendly, although bound by very strict policy. At one time (after several years of timely payments), I was going to be late turning in my rent check since I was out of state. I called to let them know that the check will be a few days late. The response was, "If it's more than 5 days late, you will need to pay a $50 late fee. If it's more than 10 days late, we will send notice of eviction." Ummm.... thanks for your understanding.
At one point in the summer, my A/C broke. By "broke" I mean it still worked, but it made a ridiculously loud pounding sound... so loud that I could not keep it on without disturbing my neighbors above and beside me. I placed a maintenance request, which was resolved 7 days later. Seven days in the summertime. They said that it was low priority because the A/C still worked.
The situation has become unacceptable. It is the reason I am searching for a new apartment, and subsequently found this site. Leaser Beware.
