Overall, a relatively decent complex (compared to other
buildings---and their rents---in the particular area), especially if
you are a CMU or Pitt student. If you are willing to take some chances
with the air-conditioning (heating/cooling) and occasionally with
laundry facilities, then this would be a good choice. If you absolutely
want to stay in the Shadyside area, then anything significantly better
would probably be at a higher rent. In short, it is a price/quality
trade-off and you should probably include this complex in your search
in any case.
On the positive side: Probably the main advantage is its proximity to
Carnegie Mellon (about 15min walk) and the University of Pittsburgh.
Also a mini-mart (ex 7/11) at the entrance, close to grocery stores
and Walnut St. UPitt and CMU shuttles stop practically at the
entrance of the building. The building itself is relatively new (by
Pittsburgh standards... built in the mid-70s) and well-preserved. A
lot of other buildings in the area are actually converted hotels etc
from the early 1900's (before the 50% drop in Pittsburgh's population)
and many really show their age.
On the negative side: Repairs and service are on the slow side. The
biggest problem are certain old appliances (laundry and AC units) which
have a high failure rate. Other than that, you probably won't have any
problems. The on-site staff are polite.
