I was a grad student who lived at Amberson Plaza Apartments for my entire four years at Pitt. It was definitely a good deal for the price. The apartment is relatively new for Pittsburgh standards (built in 1970's). Also, the apt is well insulated. So, my electric bill was never more than $30 a month, even in the winter time. Jim (handyman) and Jennifer (the manager) are really nice and polite! Also, the complex is really close to Giant Eagle, Shadyside Walnut Street, Pitt, CMU as well as having major bus lines (71A, 71C, and 81B) really close by.
There were a few negatives about Amberson Plaza though. Music from upstairs neighbor can be quite annoying, especially with the bass on. Noise insulation from my next door neighbors is much better. Also, the safety of the outside parking lot is OK for the most part, especially with Pitt police cars cruising there occasionally. However, I have heard of people's car being broken into. As for myself, I had my windshield shot by a BB gun (probably by some idiotic Pitt undergrad). Also, parking can be a beeoootch, if you come home too late. Another negative is a nearby train track. But noise is not too bad with my windows closed. Finally, good luck finding washers and dryers on weekends, especially when many of them are down frequently.
But overall I was pleased with my stay at Amberson Plaza. Afterall, I lived there for 4 years. If I were moving back to da burgh again, I think I would consider moving back there.
