Not bad, but not good...

If you're picky, don't live here. If you're looking for a place that makes for a great commute downtown or towards the airport, you're in the right area. You're less than 5 minutes from convenience stores, Eat 'N Park, grocery stores, restaurants, tanning salons, pizza places, tire shops...you name it. But it was also pretty quiet...you could see grass and the whole place is surrounded by wooded areas. Rent is semi-reasonable, depending on your living situation.
Now, to tear this place apart. The whole place is pretty old and flimsy. The only windows that open in the place are the sliding glass doors. The screens break. The doors are pathetic. Paint jobs are poor, and the plumming is an abortion...I'm serious, it's really bad. Stock up on Draino before you move in. The outlets are junk, there is no overhead lighting in any of the rooms except the bathroom and kitchen, and if you're easily annoyed by insects, proceed to reconsider another future home.
And do you like great technology' Not going to get it here at Crane Village. You can't get Comcast High-Speed Internet, it's about the only place in Pittsburgh you can't, at least when I lived there it was like that, and because the phone lines are so old in the building, Verizon DSL is about as effective as Dial-Up, or worse. Comcast Digital Cable is available though, but count on you having to call the serviceman to your place about once a month to tinker with your setup to resume service. And the laundry facilities might as well be in a fly-infested dungeon, and it'll cost you an arm and a piece of your genitals to do it there. It's little things like these that will have you a bit discontent with The Village long before you're scheduled to leave.
Finally, I hope you're a very tolerant people-person. Like others have said, the whole place reeks of some un-American cooking. And I'm not trying to be rude. But if you're not used to it, it can be overpowering. And our whole storage area smelled like an Indian Christmas Tree. It gave me a headache everytime I had to walk through to launder my clothes. No one there ever gave me or us a problem, but as a white American, I definitely felt like the minority. The Ninjas run rampant, if you get my drift. Despite others' claims of rude management, some of those in the office are very nice, some treat you like a bucket of ----, but the Manager, Jay Adams, is a pretty good guy, from my dealings with him.
In conclusion, if you're not a big enough ------- to gripe about living next to other people, you want a quick commute throughout the area, and like a laid-back, quiet community, and willing to be satisfied to get what you pay for, you'll be fine at Crane Village, especially if you're single. It's not a place I'd want to raise a family, but it isn't as bad as some might say.
