pricey but worth it!

I lived in the Fairfax for two years. I wouldn't have moved out if I had not to change cities, and I can't imagine finding a new apartment that will be as nice as the Fairfax.
Yes - the building is old, but it has been renovated and it's maintained well. They recently updated the gym, so now it has new machines and a new flat screen tv. I could sometimes hear noises or smell food cooking coming from people's apartments in the HALLWAY, but NEVER once inside my place. The only noises that bothered me were trains passing by in the night. But, Pittsburgh is a city and there are going to be city noises everywhere. I never had any major maintenance problems, so I can't comment on that. I was lucky and got a "Q" parking permit (Thank you Milly!!) and could park right outside the building. They offer a parking lot for an additional monthly charge - but it's not covered. "J" parking permits are only about a block away.
The rent is pricey and it goes up every year. But IMO, it was worth it.
