This is my first time living away from home and I couldn't have imagined a better place for this first experience. Having all utilities included in the rent makes monthly bill-paying easy and keeps you from worrying about the expense of heat or a/c. Laundry rooms on every floor keep you from having to make winter runs to the laundromat. Comcast cable internet just became available in the building if you're a speed-freak. And you can't beat the manager, Lucy. She's just awesome.
The building is also in a great location. Giant Eagle is right across the street, and you can bring the shopping carts up in the elevator to unload groceries, as long as you leave them outside the building afterward. There's a Whole Foods two blocks away if you're into healthier food; Quiznos, Subway, Panera and Wendy's are within walking distance if you're not. Eckerd and Blockbuster are a block away on Baum. Four buslines stop at the intersection (71A to Oakland/Downtown, 64A to Squirrel Hill/Waterfront, 81B to Downtown, 86A to Bloomfield/the Strip/Downtown) and the East Busway has a stop right behind the building.
There are a few drawbacks to the building, though they are minor. Whether you live in the front or back of the building, there is some noise from below. The building is on Centre Ave. a few blocks from Shadyside Hospital, so ambulances pass by once in a while. The back of the building faces the train tracks and the East Busway, so there's some noise there. You get used to it all pretty quickly, though. If you have a car, be sure you can get a parking space. The garage wasn't designed to hold a car for every tenant, so space is at a premium. The windows don't have screens so you have to be careful about flies, etc. in the summer, though the building seems free of any bugs in residence. The laundry rooms are a little pricy, at $1.00 each for washers and driers, but you can easily buy rolls of quarters at the bank (get at least $40 worth and you won't have to go back for a while). Lastly, I cook A LOT, so the kitchen is a bit small for me. If you're not a big cook, this is not a problem at all. If you are, you learn to get creative with storage and prep space.
Overall, this is a good apartment building with many nice features (the manager included) and a few minor drawbacks. Highly recommended.
