I was a tenant in another apartment complex in the area of Kennilworth and decided to check it out. If, I could do it over again I would have never moved into Preferred Properties across the street and moved into Kennilworth. The maintenance people were always friendly to me even though I hadn't thought about living there. So, I finally acquired about the place after talking to a tenant and actually returning a Pitt ID to another tenant, who was in grad school. I worked so it was a great for me as a single female professional to want to move to Kennilworth. It has a few drawbacks. One of which is the noise from Jimmy Tsang's when they had their dances. The system was pumping and I mean pumping from all the way outside. However, I think they stopped the dances because too many high schools kids from the area were getting into the restaurant and causing fights. One time six police cars showed up so, the dances started to wind down and come to an end after while. And, no this is not an every time occurrence just a one-time thing. The neighborhood is actually safe and is also very convenient with or without a car. Just don't prop open your security doors at night that is how the East Neighborhood Rapist got into some of the apartments in this area. Other than that Whole Foods is not far and neither is Giant Eagle and you can catch a bus to almost anywhere if need be. The Martin Luther King Jr. Busway is nearby and you can still get to work in Oakland or Downtown without the headaches of some claustrophic inducing buses like the 71A. You can now for a short time at least catch a Pitt or CMU shuttle if you go to school or work for them and live in this area. Just watch out for the houses converted into apartments the noise and the heating/cooling systems are not equal in every apartment. I lived in the Shadyside/Friendship/East Liberty part of the city and I know my way around after living here for almost 8 years so trust me. Another drawback is the location it is in a high traffic area but, the farther up you go the less ground level noise you hear like from the trains, the buses, and when people like to speed from S. Negley to Penn Circle West. The noise factor is a given because it is city living in that intersection. My last drawback is parking. It is indoors which is good especially when Pittsburgh gets its occasional heavy snow or just when don't want to clean off your car. The bad thing it is limited. When I was looking I didn't own a car but, when I did I wasn't so sure I could still rent from them. It is better than living on other streets where you have to move your car whenever there is the street cleaner from April until early November. And, if you don't move they will give you a ticket. Other than that I will say of the four complexes in that block/intersection of Essex House, Preferred Properties, Carlyle Arms and Kennilworth, my choice would be Kennilworth. I knew someone who lived in Essex House and moved when she got a job after graduating from her master's program and said it had too many elderly people and it was too expensive, she was a yuppie and just wanted to meet people like her and in her age range, that was all. And, Preferred Properties across the street next to Surgi-Care is cheap because the guy is considered a slumlord check out City Search for reviews about him. Enjoy Kennilworth!! I wish I had.
