Loved it!

Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
I have to disagree with the previous review. I lived for a year at New King Edward, and for the rent I paid, my apartment was huge and gorgeous. (However, mgmt has recently added a flat-rate utility surcharge to the base rent.)Compared to other one bedrooms I looked at in the area, my apt was the lowest-priced, biggest, and most well-maintained.
Parking:
Parking is usually available on nearby side streets, but can be a bit of a hassle. It costs $75 p/month to park in the attached garage, and I found it worth it to have attached covered, secure, guarunteed parking. (Garage price is on par w/nearby garages - it is a city after all.)
Noise:
Sterling doesn't rent to undergrads, so the building is overall very quiet. I could occasionally hear my upstairs neighbor walking around, but the walls are thick (like, concrete thick) - quietest place I've ever lived.
Grounds:
The building is old, but I found it to be very well-maintained. The entire building has new windows, and my apartment had a brand-new kitchen installed right before I moved in. Bathroom had a newer commode & sink, but could stand to be re-tiled. Overall lots of charm & in great shape for its age though.
Safety:
As a young, single woman living alone, I never felt unsafe. The area is reasonably safe, though I wouldn't walk around alone at night (especially on Center Ave). The building's entrance is secure as long as people don't let non-residents in at random.
Construction:
I broke several drill bits trying to hang pictures/curtains/etc. The walls must be made of concrete or solid rock. (Hint: Get a masonry bit.) Fixtures, appliances, etc. are nothing special, but clean and generally new (at least in my apt).
Maintenance:
The maintenance staff is superb. Many of them have been around for years and are familiar with all the quirks of an old buildings. Problems (I never had anything serious) were fixed within 24 hours at the absolute most. I once had a guy respond to a call within 10 minutes after hours on a Saturday night. They look a little thuggish, but they're friendly and good at their jobs.
Staff:
As others noted, they're not the friendliest bunch, but I always found them efficient and professional, so I don't mind not being their best friend. I never had any problems with them at all. (Regarding security deposits - I've been waiting to get mine back to complete this review. I cleaned my apt thoroughly & got every cent back.)
Overall:
Beautiful apartments. (I had SEVEN ENORMOUS closet!) Staff is professional, building is quiet and well-maintained. Convenient to Oakland, Shadyside, Pitt, & CMU. Right on busline. Probably pricier than some dump in South Oakland, but you get what you pay for.
