Maintenance Employee and Parking Complaint

On Wednesday, April 5th I had a very unnerving experience with one of the Maintenance employees on the job at Amberson Apartments. I am relaying the accounts of the evening because I believe his behavior was inappropriate, rude, and arguably abusive - not the kind of behavior any employer would want to be associated with. I am not a resident of the apartments; my friend was visiting a resident and I happened to be with him. I am, however, a resident of another of Meyers Management's buildings, so I believe this is still in the domain of my concern.

The situation is probably one familiar to the buildings. My friend, who arrived by car, had to drop off a large parcel for his friend. Since there is no visitor parking for the building, he decided to stop in front of the building - leaving his alert lights flashing and myself in the car, to back up out of the way in case we were asked to move by anyone. Clearly, my friend was in the wrong to have stopped in that spot for too long - he was in the building for around 10 minutes, and if I hadn't been in the car, ready to move at anyone's request, he could have been at risk of incuring a fine of having a tow-tuck called over. But I was in the car, at the ready to avoid such a situation.

At some point within the 10 minutes that my friend was in the building, a maintenance employee in a red SUV, donning a moustache, creeped behind me and parked perpendicularly to our vehicle, blocking the exit path of my friend's car. He promptly entered the building without attempting to communicate with me. When I noticed his car, I figured that he had not seen me sitting in the car, or was going to be in and out within a minute. It didn't occur to me that this was his space, and that furthermore, he was going to use this blockage opportunity as unneccessary vengeance for our mistake.

Upon my friend's return, we were able to get the parking attendant on dutie to find the maintenance employee for us. A few minutes later, the maintenance employee came down and I began, in a polite tone, to speak with him, trying to find out whether he had purposefully closed us in. The employee, in a quickly increasingly aggrivated and abusive tone, continually stated that we had been in error for parking in a no-parking spot. I was in complete agreement with him. I tried to instill in him the idea that blocking someone in when they could have easily driven out of the spot is inefficient AND unecessarily aggressive and confrontational. Every time I opened my mouth to speak, he would angrily retort without consideration that we were wrong to have been there. This exchange lasted around 15 minutes. We were in a rush to get somewhere, and by the end of the 'exchange' he was threatining to call the tow-truck, so I was forced to allow him to indulge his power-trip and played submissive.

Two elements of this scenario were disturbing to me: firstly, that the employee would take such an action in the first place when he could have easily asked me to move. Secondly, that he was unable to engage in a discussion about the validity of his actions. It is quite unnerving to witness a man use a situation of power to affirm his righteousness over those under his power.

I ask the management to confront the employee (and any others who might have already acted similarly) about the situation and to take actions to see that this abuse is not acted out in the future.

I understand that the parking situation at Amberson has been a source of aggrevation in the past, but I don't believe that spiteful behavior is the appropriate response to the situation. A little bit of compassion and coolness can go a long way in promoting a more pleasant environment at your building.

Such an interesting story. This is because memebers of mangement are rude and ignornat. And thats just it. Also I moved from Pittsburgh and will NEVER go back. I promise you if you consider moving elsehwere and seeing how other places are you would never come back either. The city is horrible and Meyers management is proof of that!
