Mozart Always Wins

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2004
I have agreed to many leases in my time as a tenant in Pittsburgh and elsewhere. I have had my share of good and bad experiences, however my ordeal with Mozart Management was the most outrageous. I knew the lease depicted much, much more than most leases do when I signed it in 2001, but I was moving from one apartment with another management company and needed a place to live FAST. In Shadyside, that's an understatement. I wish I had known about this website before I signed the lease.
I lived in The Cavendesh on Shady Avenue. The parking lot of this building is a major thoroughfair for criminals. I had my car stolen while I yelled from the window and later had a 5 day old CD player stolen out of my truck that replaced the stolen car. Mozart felt that street crime wasn't their problem. But they had no problem cashing my rent check that pays for a parking spot on PRIVATE PROPERTY. After my first encounter with auto theft, Mozart was 100% unapologetic and would not even forgoe the parking fee for the TWO MONTHS my car was missing. It IS their responsibility to put up fences and keep people from wandering through private property if tenants are paying for it. After my second serious loss of property I demanded that Mozart release me from the lease agreement that says $1500 must be payed up front to leave. I am not some flaky tenant who is unaware of what a lease agreement means. I am a hardworking tenant who was tired of being taken advantage of by rampant theft on property I was paying for. In my opinion, that is outside of the lease agreement and any honest leasing company would admit when one of their tenants has been victimized extensively and waive punitive end-of-lease-fees. Mozart did not and threatened to sue me. They talked down to me and said they would win because they "have deep pockets." I can't explain the overwhelming feeling of being trapped when I've lost $1,000's of dollars in theft on their property and then lose $1,000's more just to release myself from their oppressive living arrangement. The day I came to move my belongings out, the girl across the hall had called the police to report her car stolen from the same parking lot. This is NOT just a problem for the city of Pittsburgh. Mozart has every opportunity to fence in the parking lot and take measures to ensure better security. They also have the power to treat each tenant differently and waive certain fees, albeit not all of them, I understand. I had no choice but to lose all of that money and be angry about it. I did not want to risk being sued since their lease entitles them to EVERYTHING. I have had many a homicidal fantasy after dealing with Mozart's "managers" and discourage all prospective tenants from renting with Mozart.
