I was plesantly suprised to find the Oak Hill Apts. so near the hospital and campus. The ladys who showed the homes were very nice, and we were ready to sign. Luckely, I needed a cosigner. When I brought my parents to come drive by the place later that evening, I was horrified! The atmosphere was totally different. I was afraid to get out of my car. There were teenage "gangs" of people yelling and swearing, spitting. This is not to mention the blasting music and loud horns that were blaring. Althogher nasty. With such a thorough application I thought we were safe- but they dont tell prospective renters that half of the houses are rented through the government to low-income families- which results in a bad environment- stay away!!!

A little internet research reveals that Oak Hill is a project of Beacon/Corcoran, a developing company, to convert the local projects in the Hill Distrcit (the burgh's most notorious 'hood) into "mixed-income" housing. What that means for you, the renter, is a complex adjacent to (and running into) the worst 'hood in the city. The leasing office advertises this as a place for professionals associated with UPMC, and the complicated, thorough application makes it seem like they are highly selective. They neglect to mention all the section 8 tenants living in the housing. Take a drive through in the evening (lock your doors) and ask yourself if you still want to live here (I guess all the shiftless, shady looking people running around are resident physicians, huh?) When all the reviews complain about the same thing, chances are they are right. Look elsewhere and live somplace safe.

First of all, everyone on Section 8 are not bad people or "hood". They are hard working individuals such as myself trying to make it in the world who unfortunately did not have the luxury of being born with a silver spoon in their mouths!!!! Second of all, if you did a litte more research on the topic at hand you would know that Oak Hill DOES NOT accept Section 8 vouchers.
