i lived in the janette apartment buildings in north oakland for 2 years. the first year was not the best renting experience... the property manager was horrible and very unresponsive. they got a new manager my second year there. while he was very responsive and eager to help, he didn't always solve our problems. we were left without a functioning stove for approximately 2 weeks while he decided where to buy the new part from. we got a brand new refrigerator the second year and new carpeting.

we had a little insect problem in the summer, mostly with gnats. i suspect it was because our neighbors piled their garbage up to 15-20 bags on the fire escape outside of our back entrance and the bugs found our kitchen on the other side of the door and came in for a visit. this could have been avoided, however.

it was a good price for a nicely sized 3 bedroom apartment. we didn't have much problems hearing our neighbors, but there were occassionally loud parties on people's balconies or in the courtyard a few times in the summer.

we got almost all or our security deposit back, minus i think 25 dollars to clean the rug. no big deal.

the place is ideal if you're a student, but i wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for a more mature setting.
