Nice Apartment, Horrible Staff
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 9/9/2008
Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
I absolutely loved my apartment. It was quiet, decently maintained, safe, and I had no problems the first nine months I lived there, other than my disposal backing up the second day after I moved in (which was fixed immediately.) Then something happened with the furnace near the end of the spring which resulted in lethal amounts of carbon monoxide leaking into my apartment, and this necessitated the complete replacement of my furnace (twice, as the first one didn't work right.) I still don't think it functions properly, as the air conditioning part of it runs all day long and can't even keep it at the temperature set on the thermostat (77 degrees!) But they have said it's fine and won't come out to look at it again.
In June, I was told that my lease would not be renewed, and I was to "quietly vacate the premises" as if I had done something wrong. The property manager (Frank) would not return my calls, and the office staff at the main building were downright rude when I questioned them about it (especially the leasing manager, Diana.) One guy promised to get to the bottom of it and have my lease renewed if he didn't find "legitimate cause" for them asking me to leave, but was very cold and rude after he had made his "inquiries" and still didn't give me any additional information on the matter. Finally, I was told by an office executive that they could not give me a reason, as it opened them up to litigation (which led me to believe that there WAS no legitimate reason.)
I received no complaints from my neighbors and other than the disposal and furnace, made zero maintenance requests. I have no idea why I was treated so badly; perhaps they would rather I have died in my apartment from the carbon monoxide than go to the trouble of having to replace the furnace. I was firm with my requests for a space heater while the furnace issues were going on, and in my instructions on how to leave my windows and doors so that my apartment was properly ventilated. But I don't believe I was ever inappropriate or rude to them, so I don't know how they could be justified in treating me so rudely, and then kicking me out of my apartment. I find it extremely shady that a property manager, who has never met me in person and only spoke to me a couple times on the phone, has the ultimate say on who renews and who doesn't, and that his word is taken at face value and never questioned. I am very upset by how I was treated and by having to move yet again from an apartment which I loved. The only person there who treated me with any kind of decency was the maintenance guy, Steve. Needless to say, Prudential will never make another dollar from me. Just be careful when you rent from them; if you are hoping to stay for longer than a year, don't make serious maintenance requests!
