My girlfriend moved from California (SLO) two months ago, and have been very happy so far. We lucked out with a first floor apartment that hadn't been rented in a while. The management company was very, very helpful and nice, and gave us a nice deal on the apartment ($810/mo instead of $880 for a 2 bedroom).
We had a problem with one of our locks sticking on the first day, and they replaced the lock within an hour. We had one other minor issue with the stove (which was our fault, it turned out) and they still were there in an hour to check it out.
Parking is somewhat limited in the underground garages, but we got one pretty easily just before student started pouring in to town. It's only $55 per month, and every stall has its own door. Very nice.
Shadyside's shopping area is only a 10 minute walk, and Squirrel Hill is just about 15 minutes by foot. There are several bus routes on the corner in front of the complex, however, and will take you to most major areas of the city without needing to transfer. Very convenient to Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Downtown and the Waterfont.
There is a Giant Eagle (supermarket) about 7 minutes by foot, down Shady Avenue. I usually just take a backpack and walk there.
The way the apartments are laid out, we only share about 10 feet of wall space, right by the front door, with anyone else. It is very quiet if you are not in the apartments facing Fifth Avenue or Shady.
