We moved in about a year and a half ago and it's been a good experience for the most part. I'll break down the good and bad.
Pros: It's in a great location if you work in Oakland and pretty good if you work in the Strip or Downtown. It's also great for getting to games or going out to hit the bars because you don't have to use any major highways (which means no traffic jams and DUI check points). It's a great building architecturally and the view on the roof is excellent. I think the building is from the 20's or 30's so there's a lot of features you rarely see now (real plaster on the walls instead of drywall, parque floors, high cellings, etc). Also, there is an in-building fitness center. I can't tell you how benificial this is in the winter when it's 15 degrees outside to not have to leave the building to work out. The door men are all good guys and pretty helpful. It's nice not having to sign for packages, and the mail is picked up in the building twice a day.
Cons: As some other people have mentioned, the heat can be an issue. The pipes bang loudly at times (even in the middle of the night) and in my appartment, I can't turn it off completely no matter what I do to the valve. I often found myself opening the windows in the middle of winter to try and cool the place off. Also, we lived on the back side of the building facing N Craig St, so at times the students living in the apts on the street behind us got pretty loud in the middle of the night. Like I said earlier, the building is from the 30's, so it's a bit run down in places. The apartments seem to be fairly well maintained, but some of the fixtures as well as parts of the buildings exterior are pretty dingy looking.
So-so: Parking usually isn't bad, but it can be a problem during the day when people drive into Oakland from the suburbs and park there to bus to Pitt because it's free. You have to be careful because you can and will get parking tickets. Also, it's not the greatest neighborhood, but it's not the worst. Behind the building towards East Liberty can be a little sketchy at times, but there are some good places to eat (there or delivery) that way as well.
All in all, I'd recommend it. x-2PE3sjUIIeetAHoKOk
