Years at this apartment:
2002
-
2004
The building is older with all the quirks that go along with it (peeling plaster, ancient stained bathtub with feet that wobbles when you stand up in it to take a shower, plumbing in the bathroom and kitchen is not inside the walls), but has two (decorative) fireplaces, glass door knobs, funky closets and interesting paneling in the dining room. I wish the apartment had been better maintained; its classy but shows its age. The building manager lied to us when we moved in, told us he would redo the kitchen and paint the place (these projects have only been half completed).
For the first year we lived here there was a terrible building manager who was impossible to get a hold of, we had to make 5-6 phone calls to him and the manager in the Union office to get anything done. Any repair work he did would be left half-finished, or was poorly done. He laid new lin. tile over the old tile (which was uneven, so the new tile is peeling up and cracking. He hung new cabinets in the kitchen and one of them fell down! Luckily it just fell onto the refrigerator and did not cause a lot of damage. Now there is a new building manager, and things are much better. The location is very convenient to grocery stores, shopping, dry-cleaning, bars and restaurants, the East Bus Way (for fast transit to downtown), Pitt and CMU (flat 1 1/2 miles away to Oakland)
Its spacious for a one bedroom (800 Ft2), and we have a porch that we use all summer (although its covered by a weird chain link fence thing - we kept it up for security, but you feel like youre sitting in a cage. The water pressure is ok, but we are often scalded - the temperature will change without warning, presumably when other residents flush their toilets or use the washing machine.
Theres no parking here, but we bought a city permit for $20 and rarely have trouble finding a spot further than 1 block for our place on the street.
Heat is included (radiators), a nice selling point in Pittsburgh.
If you like shiny, brand new apartment complexes, this is NOT the place for you, but if you want a quirky, non-cookie-cutter apartment in a convenient location, this is a great place. We really like living here.
