This apartment is expensive, no question. If you live here you pay for the location, but it's certainly very convenient to both CMU and Pitt and a number of buslines. The 5th Avenue noises can be quite loud, but I'm on the 9th floor so generally it's not too bad. The maintenance staff is terrific, and always come up within an hour of being called and fix even the most minor problem. They've also helped me hang pictures etc. which is not really their job. The cleaning staff keeps the lobby extremely clean and overall living here is very pleasant.
I have never had much problem with noisy college students, but I suppose it could depend on the floor. There are quite a few CMU undergrads on my floor but they have for the most part been pleasant neighbors. The laundry is just down the hall. For a few years they tended to break quite often but last year they completely replaced all the washers and dryers and there have been no problems since then. The apartments are all carpeted and the kitchens are decent but not deluxe (electric not gas stoves unfortunately). There is central air conditioning and heat but I rarely use either; the building is so large that it maintains its temperature pretty well. It tends to be warm in the winter even without the heat on. I'd definitely recommend this building if you can afford it and like the somewhat noisy but convenient location.
