Not a good place to live

Pluses: Very convenient to shopping and mass transit. Nice courtyards and pool. Ample hot water and heat. Washer and dryer in building works well.
Minuses: The people who manage this complex are arrogant and sometimes rude. They are slow to make repairs (which are often poor quality) and frequently fault the tenant when something is broken. The buildings are old and things break frequently. Response time for late night lockouts is poor. I was once locked out of my apartment at 1 AM and waited until 3 AM before I was able to get into my place. Mice are also a problem. I caught 2 this year. I would not recommend living at Laurel Manor.

Now, let's be fair. You have lived in our community for 7 years. Since the installation of our new computer program (April, 2006) - there has not been one single work order request asking for any repair to your apartment until this event. When you called us - we responded immediately and what we found in your apartment was beyond words.
Upon entering your bathroom; it was obvious that there were some serious issues that had gone unreported to us for many, many months. Two examples are: 1. You had a hole in your bathroom floor which you never reported, however, you took the time to purchase a piece of plexiglass to cover the hole. 2. You had placed some type of tubing onto the bathtub faucet and ran it into the sink to allow the leaking hot water to drain into the sink. Your responsibility as a resident is to report these types of issues to the management office so that it does not lead to further deterioration or larger problems. One of the unknown factors is - how much hot water has been lost and to what expense to this owner ?
Since your notification to us, to date, we have spent approximately 8 1/2 hours (2 men) attempting to repair the issues in your apartment and anticipate at least an additional 8 hours to complete the repairs.
Your statement "they are slow to make repairs and frequently fault the tenant when something is broken" is absurd under the circumstances. I hope in the future when repairs are needed that you "promptly" notify the management office so that we can attend to the repairs prior to it becoming a serious emergency and a costly, timely repair.

What about the mice he mention? I'm looking to move next year and looking for a new apartment. Would like to know if the mice problem is true or not.

Hi Anonymous, The mice come in from the outside in the Fall & Spring. Since the dwellings are old there are places where the mice can get in. Last year the Laurel Manor maintenance crew moved my stove & plugged up a space where mice were getting in & going up to my upstairs neighbors. I never saw the mice because I have a cat. The mice move on to the next apartment when you have a cat. Kitty can smell Mr. Mouse before he appears - Mice can smell whether you have a cat. Cats can hear mice when the mice are still inside the walls. If you love animals and you're not allergic to cats it may be a good idea to get yourself a cat. They're wonderful animals. No one likes to see mice but unlike rats & roaches, mice aren't hazardous to your health.
