It's ok- until you need something

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
At first I thought the apartment wasn't too bad, and it had all these cool amenities like a pool and hot tub (which was broken for most of the first half of the year). So what if the kitchen and carpet were dirty when we moved in and my roomate had a giant purple wax blob stuck to her wall' (To their credit, they did get someone to come clean the carpet... twice.) But it turns out I don't swim much, and once winter hit, it was freezing inside. Someone actually came to our door to tell us to keep the hot water-heater closet door open to heat it so that it wouldn't freeze, that's how bad the insulation is. And the hot tub only draws fifteen drunken screaming idiots on any given weekend night between midnight and three am, and guess what' Yes, we have the apartment right next to the hot tub. The management also tried to charge my roomate $85 for a replacement key when she lost hers, which I think she's still in the process of fighting.
And then two of my roomates and I tried to sublet... NIGHTMARE! The management happened to be going through upheaval at the same time, so every time one of us went to the office, we got a different story from a different person, and most of them had no idea what was going on. They tried to charge us fees that weren't in our lease, and I still haven't figured out when or if I can get my security deposit back. A far cry from what the tour guide told us when we moved in: "They help you sublet, it's really easy." The one good point about it is that parking is free and there's plenty of it, and the maintenance people are very courteous, prompt, and efficient.
Basically, if you want to stay the whole year, or just the summer (when you can actually use the pool and various athletic courts) it's fine for college students for a year or two. Just don't try to talk to anyone in the office... ever. When you consider the rent they're getting from each apartment ($1400 a month for a four-bedroom place) for shoddy buildings and not at all helpful management, it doesn't seem worth it to me. Hopefully it's changing for the better.
