Rented an apartment from the slum-lords, ended up loving it'

My roommate and I rented a 2 bedroom apartment in a house from Sun Corp last year. When we went to move in, the carpet was gone and there was just a dirty tiled floor. When we asked about it, they told us that the carpet was the former tenants and they had taken it with them (obviously not true). We also had to argue to get carpet. They told us it would be put in the next day the first time we called. It wasn't. So we called again and they told us the same thing. After it wasn't done a second time, we went down to the office. Since the office people do not like complaints, they refused to answer the door. We obviously knew people were inside, so we banged on the door until someone came out. After arguing with her in the alley (she would not let us come into the office) for a few minutes, the owner came out and we ended up threatening to sue if carpet was not put in since there was carpet when we were shown the apartment. The next day they were installing brand new carpet when we got there.

We were also told it would be furnished, but when we arrived there was a couch that looked as if it were just dragged out of a dumpster on the side of the road (and smelled like it, too!) and a desk and dresser in one bedroom. No beds, no dressers for the other bedroom, nothing. Needless to say we got rid of all the furniture and brought our own in.

Despite all this, my roommate and I ended up loving our apartment. It was close to campus and after we fixed it up a bit, it was quite cozy. Our only other complaint was that Sun Corp holds onto checks for months at a time. Parking, rent, etc. If you called maintenance directly, they were fairly fast and efficient and always very friendly. Just don't try to go through the office for anything, they are full of promises with no action.

Even now, we are still fighting them for our security deposit. We have been moved out of the apartment and living in different states for 7 months and have not heard from them. They do not answer the phone or answer letters.

Overall I would not recommend renting from Sun Corp, you may not get as lucky as we did and end up loving your place.

Everyone should call the Better Business Bureau of Western PA for a report on any business they need to know about (Sun Corp was cited by the State Attorney general a few years ago for failing to return security deposits). Man, if I had called that number before I signed the lease I did with them, I would've avoided a lot of crap - i didn't get my deposit back either, sued, and lossed - they forged some documents, and I didn't have a lawyer, so yeah, don't ever rent from them.
