I have stayed in Barclay Square Apartments for 1 year now and I intend to stay on. This place has its goods and bads and it is for you to decide whether the goods are more important to you or the bads.

First the goods: its location is quite nice. There is a small market right beside. Also public transportation (trolly that connects to blue line at 69th street) is 2 minutes walk. There is ample parking space. The parking is however open air. Last year it did not snow much, so I do not know how convenient will it be if it snows a lot. The 1BR apartment is quite spacious with a good kitchen. Finally, it is quite cheap.

Now the bads. The two main problems for me: there is no dishwasher in 1 BRs. Secondly, there is no closeby highway. So I need to take local routes to go to Univ. of Penn, which takes 30 minutes for a 6 miles drive! Some people complained about rats and noise. It probably depends upon the exact building and the unit (and your neighbors). I never have had any noise issue. However, there are rats in the building. The management does not do a good job of terminating; I complained many times and they just put some paper with glue on it, which does not really work. Another bad part is that the hallway always has a bad smell (although that does not enter the unit). I think it is because of bad design; no sunlight ever enters the hallway. The elevator works, but it is damn slow.

Overall, this happens to be a good deal for, but may not be for everyone, especially if saving money is not the most important thing to you.
